At least, I think this is my first post - I don't remember posting here before.
Like many of you, my record collection pre-punk/new wave was filled with the likes of Jethro Tull, Queen, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, etc. Then, a couple of events took place that changed everything for me. First, I caught a segment of a monthly show that was on NBC in the Saturday time slot held most Saturday's by SNL (was it called Weekend?). This segment dealt with the punk scene in Britain, including video clips of the Sex Pistols, the Damned and one or two other bands. Then, not long after that, a friend played the Sex Pistols album for me at the time it came out, as well as some Elvis Costello and Ramones. I was hooked.
I believe the first punk/new wave records I purchased were EC's "Armed Forces" (including the limited edition live EP) and the Boomtown Rats' "Tonic for the Troops", but I'm not 100% certain of this. We had a great record store in the Buffalo, NY area called "Play it again, Sam's" (now called Home of the Hits) which was heavily into the punk and new wave music that came out in the late 70's/early 80's, so I had good exposure to a wide range of bands from that era. Needless to say, I spent way too much money on music during those years and for many years after, although I don't really regret doing so.
So, long story short, I came to like a lot of great bands from that era, many of whom are still making great music today in some form or other. And of course, expanding my musical horizons has helped create interest in other musical forms that I may not otherwise have listened to had I listened to nothing but the classic rock staples of my youth. Mind you, after many years of swearing off a lot of that classic rock, I've recently started to make peace with at least some of that music as I've realized that there was some pretty good music made then, albeit a bit overplayed. Of course, overplayed classic rock beats the heck out of most of the modern rock/rap/metal being released these days, so that may also be a contributing factor to my change of heart.
Anyway, just wanted to say hello, and I hope to discover some "new" old music that maybe I missed the first time around.
