The Ramones edge out the pistols for me. Although, I do think that without all of the other NY groups and the media circus around the Sex Pistols, the Ramones would never have gotten the attention & respect they deserve.

The amount of "manufacturing" that went into the sex pistol's & their image reminds me of latter day boy-bands. Fortunatly there was some substance there. I appreciate that they motivated a huge legion of fans and a whole movement.

I don't know if I can make an educated vote though - music-wise: Ramones.
Style, attitude and media attention: Malcom McLaren & the pistols.

I thought I was takin' crazy pills! Yes, exactly! the sex pistols were made to look and act "Punk," but the integrants had little to do with the process, except just show up. McLaren already had the formula down, having already dealt with The New York Dolls. I don't give a fuck how many critics, listeners, and musicians list the sex pistols as a major influence in the scene, I still consider them one of the most overrated pieces of Pop trash ever manufactured this side of Menudo and New Kids On The Block[}:)]

Wow! Tough question. Both, in their own way, were tremendous influences. Neither can be credited solely on their own. Clearly, the Ramones had important predecessors (the Stooges, MC5 and the New York Dolls) but the Ramones brought it home to the masses. The Sex Pistols owe a huge debt to Malcolm McLaren who clearly pulled the strings early on (and Mclaren gets traced back to the Dolls too) but found that their were no strings strong enough to keep these guys in check. The Pistols' greatest contributions were probably in the way they tackled social issues with a no holds barred attitude where nothing was sacred and everything could (and would) be attacked. They were also great contributors to anti-fashion. By the way, I love the idea that Richard Hell's hair might have been an influence on the Pistols. I never thought of that and can't say if it was but certainly Johnny Rotten and Paul Cook looked like they went to Richard Hell's barber!!!!

What about Johnny Cash. I know his tunes did not sound as punk as we think punk should sound, but his attitude was ALL punk.
I agree with tragicMagic, that Ramones did more, and Sex Pistols got all the publicity. Both bands were irresponsible, hell yes... [}:)]

Sorry guys and gals I disagree Punk wasnt about which band came first if that was the case the Ramones would be first out of these two - the issue is which band brought "Punk Rock" to the forefront of music culture and that for a FACT was The Sex Pistols. The Damned released the first ever True Punk Rock single with New Rose but the Pistols did more for Punk especially in the UK than any other band merely by the controversy that came with them.

America always cites New York Dolls, patti Smith etc. I'd say Iggy pop if that was the case.

I was fortunate to have been a "Punk" not the typical God save the queen t-shirt, bondage trousers and Mohican factory produced and stereotypical punk but a Punk who was unem, mployed, on the dole and went and got into gigs to see bands like the Pistols, Damned, eater, Buzzcocks (Devoto era). Punk for me started in late 1975 and ended abruptly in 1978 - Don't let anyone fool you into anything different.

When I think of punk I think it's very much about attitude and in that respect it will always live on in spirit I say.[^]
