If you haven't read "We Got The Neutron Bomb" about the beginnings of LA punk/new wave, you're missing out. It's an intense and fascinating document on an oft-overlooked scene...a lot of great
music came out of the city of angels. Who among the below acts are your favorite?

So many great bands. However, gotta go with Boingo!

Tough choice but had to go with X. They were tremendous during the heyday

Heh, thanks. I voted for X anyway. They really were THE singularly seminal LA band. [:I]

It's a difficult choice! I would have gone with the Motels or Missing Persons had they been on the list. I went with the Go-Go's simply because I liked a lot more of their songs than the other bands listed - but there are a lot of favorites on that list!

I'll have to look for that book SuNomi. Another great book from that scene (though it covers San Francisco as well) is Hardcore California. Great pictures of X, 45 Grave, DK's, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Blasters, etc, etc, etc. Probably out of print but it can probably be found on ebay. Great, great book!

This is so funny. I'm guessing I've seen these guys 5 to 10 times each. They were such a conspicuous local staple back then.

And wow, right Wolve, didn't even think about the Motels and Missing Persons - BIG omissions.

Had to vote for The Plimsouls, even though I've seen all these bands in concert numerous times, except for The Runaways because I saw The Plimsouls every weekend at the O.N. Club in LA, Fridays the opening act was The Question, and Sat. night was The Untouchables... it was a great club and featured in the movie Valley Girl, it has the stupid support pole in front of the stage.

Other great clubs and venues where I saw these bands at: The Starwood, Whisky A Go-Go, The Roxy, Club Lingerie, The Mask, Cafe DeGrand, The Hollywood Palladium, The Palace, Perkins Palace, et al.

I just missed getting into Rodney bingenheimer's English Disco 'cause it got close down. [:(] Loads of other dance clubs though, so like after gigs I'd go to The Seven Seas, The Odessey, 321 Club, The Cavern, Mama Brown's, or The Zoo, just to name a few...

I also got my share of shows in at the Mab, On Brodway, I-Beam and the Berkeley Square... saw those Uptones guys many times, and later Dance Hall Crashers, Skankin' Pickle, and the other later third-wave ska bands of S.F. Good times! [8D]
