Tower Records Bankrupt Again

Went to Tower the other night. There are "Going Out of Business" signs all over the place. Everything in the store is discounted from 10-30%. One of the clerks said that they anticipate all brick and mortar stores in the US to be closed in 9 to 11 weeks. Tower stores in other countries might remain open and it's unknown as to whether the Tower website will continue.

Tower was founded in Sacramento (my hometown), so I guess I'm feeling pensive these days. In the summers of the late 70's, my friends and I would ride our bikes to their location. Didn't spend much money there, but it was a cool place to hang out. Tower also carried an amazing number of posters; naturally the pin-ups being the favorites of us prepubescent youth.[:p]

Same here. Mr. Birdmadgirl and I wandered around a Tower store last weekend, hoping to find a bargain or two. We've decided to check back every few days and see what we can find as prices continue to drop.

It is my understanding that Tower has sold out to Music1 but the name Tower is retained for marketing purposes.

The store we went to had signs all over the place for 10-30% off, but even with that, things were still too much, IMO.

I'll miss Tower just because I've always been able find what I want there. But, if it's not something obscure, I'll get my CDs at a big box store where I can save $7-8 ('cause i'm cheap like that!).

But, yes. Please hurry and mark things down to 50% off and then die. [}:)]

I second that! I went to Tower in Seattle, and even with 10% off the normal cd's are not nearly a bargain yet. Tower has been priced too high for at least the past ten years in my opinion. However, I will miss them dearly when they go...I've always been able to find imports that no one else carried, and really will miss the feel of browsing at Tower. Browsing the big box stores just isn't all that much fun for me.

I wonder if they'd have survived if their prices were more competitive over the years?

Went to Tower this past weekend 40-60% off.
didn't buy any discs (they had plenty)
but did buy a CD stand and a cd stand with listening station, which included the headphones and 6 disc cd player for $125 (It even had an extension cord and 2 brand new Jazz CD's in it!)

Of course I was behind the guy in line who was demanding they exchange his "adult" dvd he purchased, even though the signs plastered all over the store everywhere you look:

ALL SALES FINAL
NO REFUNDS
NO EXCHANGES
NO RETURNS

He said "What kind of store wouldn't exchange their product???"
The manager finally caved and exchanged his dvd thankfully or I would probably still be there[:(]

I bought about 15 CD singles there yesterday as they had been marked down 70%. Some went as low as 49 cents. The rest of their shit is majorly marked up and can't even match our local independent shops after the discount is applied.

Yeah, I stopped by my local Tower Records and walked out with nothing for the same reasons.

I think they would have survived if they were more competitively priced. A chainwide store revamp and an aggressive marketing / ad campaign would have done wonders for this industry insitution [:(] I'm glad though, to have worked at their downtown Manhattan location during my college years. I met all sorts of people there, like Belinda Carlisle, Mick Hucknall, David Byrne, Johnny Ramone, Ice Cube, Lady Miss Kier, Shirley MacLaine, so many others.

The only thing I hate about these sales is I pick up a lot of stuff that end up later in my junk bin. I also tend to get a lot of duplicates because I paid full price the first time and can't resist it being so cheap. [:)] Funny to hear all the comments though. I think everything you guys said ran through my mind in the past few weeks with regards to Tower Records. So does this retail store closing affect the Tower On-Line Store at all? Does anyone know? Just curious and maybe this is a California thing but most of the employees at the Towers down here look either alternative or goth. Is that true of other states too? I wonder what these Tower Records store will become after they move everything out. Will Virgin buy some of them? One more question here that I've notice lately. I've been seeing a lot of weird people at Tower lately. People that just you didn't see before or people that you just know don't normally shop at Tower. Have you guys notice that?

OK, that was about two weeks ago. I went again yesterday and I got a nice little bounty - everything was at least 50% off:

Madonna / I'm Going To Tell You A Secret, CD+DVD $14.87
Morrissey / Live From Earl's Court, CD $9.11
Morrissey / Ringleader of the Tormentors, CD+DVD $10.55
Saint Etienne / Side Streets, CD $2.40
Saint Etienne / Tales From the Turnpike House, 2CD $9.11
Saint Etienne / Soft Like Me, CD $2.40
British Sea Power / The Decline of, CD $7.19
British Sea Power / Open Season, CD $8.15
The Editors / The Back Room, CD $6.23
Tiga / Sexor, CD $9.59
Red Hot Chili Peppers / Stadium Arcadium, CD+DVD+Book+Toys Art Box Set $27.35
Billy Bragg / Vol. 1, 7CD+2DVD $36.95
Clash / Essential, DVD $8.99

A few art magazines at 75% off. And a Tower Records branded credit card holder for posterity. I'll enjoy looking at that logo from time to time. I need to look for that Tower Records bag that Trent Reznor signed for me too.

Man, there is going to be one depressing vacancy at the corner of Fourth and Broadway [V]
