CONGRATULATION BLIR for a job well done!![^] Maybe you ought to have another poll like:

NWO 100 GREATEST NEW WAVE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

This would be very interesting and since you're the expert in statistics and numbers.[;)]

Wow, what a great effort you put into this Blir! Many, many thanks - as always. The contributions that you and others put into this place are just unprecedented. You know, it's amazing how telling these NWO polls are that we have. The Joy Division / New Order duology is represented no less than six times! AWEsome! I'm going to have to replicate these results in a killer multi-disc New Wave box set for my car [:p]

Wow, kissies, to you, Blir. [:X] Talk about a labor of love (or I guess we should say "Labour of Lust" here on the NWO).

I can hardly wait to see the tree charts, or whatever the heck those are called. I think last time I got the prize for closest to the average [:I] but I think I'm diverging a little more this time.

And there are still a lot of songs on there I don't recognize. Gotta get out my mp3 Mooching Sack again . . .

Thanks for all your work, Blir. I'm amazed at how quickly you were able to clean up the lists and post the results. Outstanding.

In the meantime, it would be neat to come up with a list(and it may be up to us) to highlight the unique "ultimate songs" only one (or maybe two) listed to see what we may have missed (especially in our top tens)--to reach into the obscurities, especially, so to say.

[[b]MASSIVE EDIT!!!</B> Had some misassumptions. Please see new chart on page 2]

Here's the big daddy - The Cluster. First, several caveats. Heirarchical clustering tries to bin things that go together. In this case, we're going to bin YOU, the submittors to the poll. Clustering is also extremely qualitative and is as much a measure of things that are different as they are things that are similar. This is why things that look apparently similar often don't get placed in the same bins. Capisci?

Anyway, I used a Rank Order clustering that is good for items that contain non-natural numbers, like things that are ranked as here. I ran several other types of clusterings and found they generally gave very similar results. The correlation percentages are also qualitative on a scale of Plus-100% to Minus-100% and means nothing in the absolute. The closer you are linked to someone near the bottom of the Tree (or Dendogram), the more similar you are. Being next to somone a Branch over is not necessarily an indication of similarity - you have to go back up your Branch and see where their Branch links to your branch.

The color intensities in the matrix signify Points in this case - the more intense the Red, the greater the points that that Song/Band got. Blacks have very few points. Grays are null values. I've also computed the Average of points that any Song/Band got and made that into an individual so you can see your comparison to the Average. Oh, about Bands - I decided to include them as an individual metric in addition to the Songs with the rationale that with so many different songs, you're likely to pick the same band but not the song. That really shouldn't yield zero similarity since you did at least pick the same Band. I've therefore given a partial weighting to the Band of 1/3 of the points that that Band's song got. Wit me?

There's a bazillion patterns here - I'd love to hear others' interpretations of them as well. This is really the fun part - for everyone else to discuss eachothers' observations. GO!

I'm not surprised that the Skoochies/KYYX girls, Hex and Kimiiii, were right next to each other, though KYYX herself was over in the next branch.

I notice that very few obscure bands and therefore songs made it to the top, that's the reason why I refrained from putting obscure songs in my list. The point is that many members are not familiar with obscure songs , therefore they are not likely to include them in their lists. I think that it would be quite informative to come up with another poll reserved to obscure bands/songs.

Also, about the band ranking... Some members listed the same bands several times giving them an undue advantage in the ranking.

Nope. Bands weren't ranked toward the overall vote, only Songs were. This is a different analysis entirely and only used to correlate choices to eachother. Regardless, this isn't a contest of some sort where something has some inherent advantage over something else. It's a simple and disspassionate cartesian perusal of the outputs borne of the inputs that I asked people to provide without prejudice.

I'm just trying to figure out your computation...

01. New Order - 73

Hey Blir, would it be possible to sort this matrix by band alone?

Speaking for myself, anyway, I noticed that my band pics seemed to correlate more closely to the average than my choice of songs by a particular band.

That's a simple count of how many times a band was voted on...just another data view, not the main poll.

Sorry Hexi, both songs and bands are glommed in together in this particular analysis.
