As always I bow to your outstanding statistical knowledge and analysis, Blir. It'll take some time for me to digest the cluster analysis--Don't see to0 much of that in clinical medical trials. It looks like I'm pretty much in the middle--where I think I was in the last analysis. Thank you for your hard work.
I notice that very few obscure bands and therefore songs made it to the top, that's the reason why I refrained from putting obscure songs in my list. The point is that many members are not familiar with obscure songs , therefore they are not likely to include them in their lists. I think that it would be quite informative to come up with another poll reserved to obscure bands/songs.

Also, about the band ranking... Some members listed the same bands several times giving them an undue advantage in the ranking.

More and more actually dude. Molecular stratification of breast cancer subtypes for example. Current pathology and histological methods aren't good at parsing out Basal, Luminal A & B, and ERB2 subtypes, but molecular profiles yeild distinct signatures between the different types, which is pretty critical considering the drastically different clinical outcomes of each. Genes, songs, same difference!

Oops, okay, I'm WAY off the reservation now. Sorry. [:I]

Thanks Blir for doing the stat crunch! I like the "graph!" I guess I'm just "below" Average (is that the mean?) between EggRogger and KYYX4ever. [:D]

Hey 86, you on the bottom! How come? [?] I'm guessing no "Gentale" Wave on your part... [:D]

Dude, that is AWESOME! I stand in awe of your statistical analysis. The rankings fascinate me. Stats make me quiver. Nicely done.
Although--stats and deep math are a little beyond me. I don't really understand how that bin chart works. Am I to understand I am close to average in my rankings ? Now I have something to study. Kudos to you and your hard work, you handsome geeky stud, you![:X]

Thank you Blir for your sharing your orgasmic spreadsheet ecstasy with us. I don't really understand it - but the colors are nice & I like my position!

It's so cool to see where we fall & match up.

My question is about what qualifies as "obscure?" Since the Plimsouls never had a radio hit here, and I never saw a video - does that make them obscure? To someone it would... You can't dictate the popularity and obscurity of an artist or song because we would all have different opinions. Personally, I find the "it's popular, therefore it sucks," and the "it's obscure so it must be brilliant" arguments to be tedious.

Great point...most obscure stuff is obscure because it sucks.(believe me, I know, I have a basement full of crap) But every so often there is a group that was the victim of poor management, distribution or timing, a lost gem. Conversely, many mainstream artists wouldn't survive on their artistic merits, they are successful because of the marketing/distribution machine behind them.

Explains why I'm with Internal Medicine, not Oncology (I'm too dense for the latter)! The last time I'd seen such an analysis was a paper on the distribution of CYP-450 enzyme subtypes in differing populations for drug interaction purposes.

Ok, back to the song analysis.....

Great job Blir! The results are even more fun than voting itself. Now, if I understand the chart properly, my music taste is similar to yours which is either a compliment or scary (you can choose).
All kidding aside, this is great stuff. Thanks!

Blir,

I'm in the same bracket as Oslo and RiverHockey, yet I have almost nothing in common with them.

Only 1 song made both Oslo's and my lists (Pale Shelter). There were 2 artists in common, but the songs did not match (OMD and Cure).

RiverHockey and I also had only one song in common (So Long), and 2 artists (Ramones and A Flock of Seagulls).

You and I are further apart in the graph, but we share 5 songs and at least 6 groups.

What's up with that?

See here, plus we're only showing the top 200 elements of about 2500...
First, several caveats. Heirarchical clustering tries to bin things that go together. In this case, we're going to bin YOU, the submittors to the poll. Clustering is also extremely qualitative and is as much a measure of things that are different as they are things that are similar. This is why things that look apparently similar often don't get placed in the same bins. For example, if everyone picked many of the same things at similar values, those won't be weighted as heavily as if you picked some of those elements but also many divergent things that differed greatly from the norm. That's why people like Abs and Eight6 consistently rank similar to eachother, far away from the Average, but look very different and in reality, this is as much a measure of their dissimilarity to the Average as it is of similarity to eachother. Capisci?[/quote]

Hi Blir! I guess, we better show the other elements since a lot of our board members are also beginning to get confuse that the voters are also being ranked which is not the case right since it's really 2,500 elements.[8D] It's like that there are many diseases right now and only the common diseases would strike a certain group of patients.[;)]

In general point of view, these stats are amazing![;)] But after analyzing the cluster data I've some questions.
What's the margin of error here?
How did you come up with an AVERAGE that is shifting to the right?
What's the domain used to analyze the reciprocity of the voters since, it's unlikely to derive a voter's ranking with just 0.08% of the elements you've just mentioned? This would put up bias on the results.

THANKS FOR THE TIME!![8D]

WOW! I'm weak in the knees at all this wonderfully geeky data! Or maybe I'm weak in the knees because I'm next to the number cruncher-man himself. How'd that happen? Yep, we've got great taste. [;)] And how did I end up so far to the left? I've never thought my taste in new wave is so far away from the average. I've always thought I'm fairly mainstream on this forum. Also, whether the poll is music or politics, I always end up the farthest to the left. [:D]

Blir, many thanks for putting our collective music preferences into statistical and graphical form. This is truly going the extra mile for NWO. What a great resource this is for the forum. Outstanding!
