Great bands that vanished before their time

Postby SuNomi » Thu Oct 12, 2006 10:34 am

Some released only one album or EP, some never made an official recording at all. My favorite is The Screamers from LA. They were among the first in 76-77, but never made a album. They had a unique setup: Two Keyboards, Drums and a singer who was really out there (If you watch one of their rudimentary videos on YouTube you'll see what I mean.) Pure punk attitude without guitar. Funny and disturbing at the same time. Is there a band you know of who became legendary in your area, or as Richard Brautigan put it, "disappeared in their becoming"?

<p align="justify">Is this... is this the kind of junk record collectr0s refer to as "private press"?[}:)] I think I saw eight6's e-bay link where he bought some cool-looking cold synth raers from Canadia. I'm just wonderin' if Righeira had an actual album, or if it was the one single they played over and over for years.

There are a few that come to mind, but I will say Empire to me is a great lp.I think I bought it in the early 80,s.It is the only lp the forgotten members of Generation X put out.I don,t know if it was ever reissued but it is worth a look.I,ve been told originals are scarce.

I'd go with Haircut 100, released "Pelican West" with Nick Heyward on lead vocals. He departed the band after thier debut album. The remainder of the group released another album under the Haircut 100 name that no one remembers. From what I have read the group still has songs in the can with Heyward that have never seen the light of day due to legal wranglings, too bad.

The albums is Paint and Paint and stands up a lot better than the bland first album. The only mistake they made with it is choosing an album track for a single rather than the more obvious choices of 'Infatuation', 'Fish in a Bowl' or 'Too Up Two Down'.

Part of the unreleased album has 'appeared' and contains a live track, the instrumental version of "Blue Hat for a Blue Day" a few more instrumentals and a couple of songs. All the vocals in the song tracks are pretty rough.

The Mothmen-"One Black Dot", from 1981. What an overlooked gem of a postpunk record.

The Modern Pioneers-a band from Long Island that put out an EP called The Big Hookup in 1982/3. Great Power Pop.

All of these bands had lots of hits here and none of them disappeared before their time.

Classix Nouveau were a concentrated dose of New Romanticism and were great in that area, but when the public wanted a new sound as they did in the mid-80s then you're stuffed. A shame since La Verite is a great album.

Visage went because Midge Ure wanted to concentrate on Ultravox and Steve wanted to become a rocker (and we all know how successful that wasn't).

Bronski Beat despite the change of singer continued to have hits but called it a day when PSB and Erasure starting doing similiar things.

Blancmange changed their sound for the third album and whilst it was a good LP lacked a distinctive track for the single. The change in sound resulted in poor sales and the turning in the musical tide saw them calling it quits.

As far as I know which makes them perfect for this thread, a damn shame. [:(]

I know I have it on a comp, but I'm sure Simon had mentioned that it was released as a 7".
