You're not really. Think of the tree as one of those hanging mobiles. The nodes can swing around in 3-D so that the only relatedness is from the nodes. If we flip the two main nodes around in 2-D, it's still the same representation except Marie would be on the other side and DSR would be right next to you...now, you wouldn't want that would you?!

Gee, that makes me feel better.[:)][:D][}:)][:X][:X][:0][B)][:(][;)][8D][8D][V][xx(][:(!][^] Is this actually some secret semaphore those guys are using?

Well well well... if not for Dr. Emoticon, I would't see you using those little cuties on your posts, eh? I swear I only remember seeing you using an emoticon once or twice before! Hahaha!

Emoticons are for those who feel their words don't adequately convey their true feelings...no problem with that here. I would however be quite interested in a collection of "angsticons". You know, things like "drop dead asshole", "you're a fucking clown" and "my, how Cooganesque" could get some regular use by me.

I only know this:

When I hold up my red cellophane Captain America Message Decoder in front of the graph on the screen, I can clearly see a message that says, "Sorry, You Are Not A Winner."

Just an interesting note--The Cars score rather low on this I think with song 201 being the first one--I think--Yet when we did our album list a year or two ago--The Cars debut popped in at 2 I think and Candy -o somewhare in the 30's. Is that saying we as a group see them being consistantly good but lacking THE outstanding song? (although they had number one on my list)

I think maybe two things going on here. 1) The Cars have a ton of great songs and too many different ones got selected, but also 2) people just forget how great they were and how central to the early new wave they were as well. Same thing with The Police - where are they? Maybe that also has a backlash against Sting just not going away. The Clash score higher in a straight "Bands" list too, but again, with so many songs and being relatively earlier in the era, they get bumped down in a songs list. Pretenders are probably in this class too - staples that get kinda overlooked.

Plus I bet we just answer the different questions differently. The bands we hold up as our icons and what we really like listening to more routinely might be slightly different.

Lastly, I'd also bet there's an additional stratification here of people who grock more post-MTV new wave vs. pre-MTV new wave. Hmmm, this gives me an idea - a stratification by year??

I understand totally where you're coming from Randy.
I was suprised to see blondie rank so low.

I think part of the reason is that songs from bands like the Cars,
Police, Pretenders, Blondie, etc. are classics. We heard them
A LOT when we were younger & continue to hear them today. As much
as I love songs from 3 of those bands, I'm so familiar with them,
kind of tired of them & don't include them in my top 50 because
there is more exciting stuff that is newer to me. If this were a
top 100 then those bands would surely show up, and maybe have ranked
higher than 50 & below.

There is no doubt that I consider the Cars, Police, Pretenders,
Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith etc to
be some of the most important acts in the genre but their music &
legacy is best remembered as a whole overview of their work & not
just one or two songs here & there.

I included 3 Blondie songs in my top 50 because to this day, even
though I've heard those songs 10,000 times - I still love them &
probably put them up there for sentimental reasons just as much as
putting them up because they are favorites.

I also think song lists are exactly that - about great songs - maybe
not so much about the artists. An album list would probably (and
did before) skew much differently.
