Thoughts on three songs

Postby SwampThing » Mon Jul 10, 2006 7:21 am

Recently on a internet radio station I heard three songs I hadn't heard in 20+ years. I'm assuming they weren't big hits since they don't appear on any of the 50+ 80's compilations CD I have.

Black Stations - Martha & The Muffins
Great Southern Lands - Icehouse
Get Started, Start a Fire - Graham Parker

I'm not really a big fan of these bands, but I really dug hearing these songs again.

Any thought of these songs? I don't think they're rare, but I'll check the for them on the hub later this week.

"Black Stations/White Stations" is a classic!

I have the entire M+M greatest hits uploaded on the hub, feel free to download from me, I also highly recommend "Danseparc" and "You Sold The Cottage"

Thanks, Justin

Like all three. I think the M&M track was past the point where they had their edgier, new wave sound, but was still quite good.

As for Graham Parker, the man writes brilliant songs, and is still a master at his craft IMO. I pretty much will buy anything he re releases, and have yet to be disappointed. LOve the song you mentioned here. One of my all time favorites by him is his early 80s release Another Grey Area. That song, and especially the song Temporary Beauty, sum up his brilliance for me.

That Icehouse track is also one I really enjoy. Love their work up thru about 1987, and the one CD of all cover versions is actually pretty damn fine also. The Berlin Tapes - excellent. It may essentially just be Ira Davies, I am not sure, but I like it.

Swampthing -

I have all the Icehouse CDs. Mario (mskremember) also posted two extended versions of Great Southern Land that are worth a listen to - a rustic, World Beat feel that is pretty cool.

Like Grunch said, good stuff from the boys from Down Under.

Iva Davies, the brains of the outfit, recently has been on to higher art: some special stuff for the Sydney Olympics; "Boxes", a soundtrack for a ballet from Sydney Dance Company; and most recently scoring (with Richard Tognetti) "Master and Commander."

He's releasing the latest Icehouse album "Bi-Polar Poems" via the Icheouse website. I've been keeping up with them as well.

The first two songs are both great, I haven't heard the Graham Parker, but I do like his music. I can say for certain that if you liked these songs, you'd probably like the rest of the music by these bands as well.

Great Southern Lands - Icehouse

I only like three Iceouse songs. 'Hey Little Girl'. "Icehouse' and 'Great Southern Lands'.....Icehouse became one of those 80's bands I resented by eventually appealing to a bubble gum pop consortium ie: 'Electric Blue'. Those early singles were more in the vein of Roxy Music....

I still think "Trojan Blue" is Icehoue's best song, it's incredibly haunting, and not a hit if I'm not mistaken.

[/quote] You can try this link. http://www.emusic.com/toolbar/channels/alternative.html

Might only work if you have emusic toolbar installed.

The station is really hit or miss. Seems to rotate between todays alternative and 80's mainstream new wave. Once in a while they throw in a block of lesser known 80's music. I think its sourced from Live365.com

I just had a listen to "Great Southern Land"...that is such a good song. I like it more now than when it first came out. [:D]

I hear you, you gotta love CanCon. At least it beats Parachute Club. I still fantasize about punching the lead singer in the face.

Martha & The Muffins is what New Wave is all about. I love everything from them.

Great Southern Land is a beautiful song by one of the class acts of New Wave. Iva Davies has an amazing voice. I love this song along with Man Of Colours, No Promises, Hey Little Girl, Street Cafe, and the entire "Flowers" album.

No comment on the Graham Parker song.

I have to express my solidarity with Sean on this.
Living in the USA, listening to American radio stations, my experience was that M + M were not overplayed (Echo Beach and Black Stations were the only thing I ever heard by them on commercial radio stations). I would assume that the situation in Canada was much different.
And M + M had, lets see, 5 albums of solid material (I'm not counting The World Is a Ball here).
The song "Swimming" and the album Dansparc are sadly neglected IMHO.
