Music Database Software

Postby Max Murdoc » Mon Oct 30, 2006 12:01 am

I did a search on this topic but found nothing so forgive me if I missed something.

What does everyone here use to catagorize their collections? I haven't found one yet that I like. Any recommendations? I have been trying to make my own program but it's pretty long in the making.

Do you want to categorize actual music (mp3s, wav files, etc.) on your computer?

If so download iTunes.

I've got iTunes which I don't like....I even gave my iPod to my daughter.

I have about 75% of my 20,000+ MP3's sorted and in files but what I want is to be able to retrieve info from my collection.

What I want to do is setup a database where all the info from a particular release (tracks, images, producer, members any interesting facts) can be accessed with a click of a button. You click on the name of the band and a list comes up with all of their releases (that I have). Then click on a release to pull up additional info (images, members etc.)It must also be able to sort by year, label, members, producer....I'm not asking for much am I? Customizable is what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have anything like that? Or shall I continue working an making my own program....I can do it, I'm just impatient.

Thanks for the replies.
Max

I have a program now called OrangeCD (or maybe I deleted it) but it just didn't do it for me. Too messy and or complicated. Not a friendly program. I know...I'm picky. I think I'll just continue on with the Excel (Access) one I'm working on.

There are plenty of softwares available, Orange CD is one of them, they sell for about $40 with a free trial period. Usually, we have to put the CD in the CD-player to build the data base and retrieve info from the net but in the case of obscure bands I wonder if it will work. This feature is not always available for mp3 although it is possible to edit, sort, rename etc files. Maybe U could try Collectorz.com mp3 collector.

Max building your own database in Access is probally going to be your best way to go, I think; however, that's a lot of info to type in, I'm sure you can import if you have it already in Excel.

Basically, all that for-pay software like Collectorz has done is tap into Gracenote's CDDB software developers kit and wrap a fancy Access-like front end on it. If you know any programming, you can tap into the alternative open source mirror called FreeDB...but it requires more knowledge than I have.

Alternately, what you could do is build an Access back end but just use something like iTunes as the front end - just pop in a CD but instead of ripping it, copy and paste the CDDB annotation into Access or a spreadsheet. Of course, LPs and tapes will be problematic, but AMG is a great source for simple copy-pasting.

Everything's in Excel right now that's why I was shooting for Access. It's just another project I have to do (on top of all the others). Like I have other things to do....ha!

Thanks for all the input.

Has anyone used this?

I've heard some positive feedback but I haven't tried it yet myself.

I snatched it last night and so far it's pretty good. It looks good, it's easy to figure out and it does a ton of things.....and it's free! You can upgrade to the "Gold" edition (which I might eventually do). Thanks for the heads up.

What is cool about this program is that since I had the majority of tunes already in Excel it was really easy to get it up and going. Even the images popped up right where they should have.

Now I also know how many ID3 tags I had that were screwed up. I thought I was pretty good on making sure they were complete but apparently I was badly mistaken.

Yes Sir, I like it.
