says my 13-year-old daughter as I'm driving her to a soccer game with "Speak & Spell" on the car stereo. And this is the kid who frequently borrows my Blondie, U2, REM, and Cure CDs- and leaves the case, liner notes and disc lying around far from each other (grrrr...)

The fact that she can approach this music as a first time listener is very cool and nostalgic feelings can't get in the way.

For me, I can't listen to Speak & Spell anymore. It's my least favorite DM album, they improved drastically after that one.

You're right SwampThing. She's only heard synthy music in video games, not on the radio. It just doesn't sound like "real" music to her. I still like the early DM quite a bit.

I subject my 13 year old son to my love of New Wave music on daily basis either in the car, VH-1 classic, or the Directv XM music channels. He tells me to get out of the eighties, little does he know in about 25 to 30 years he will be playing his cd's or what ever music will be on then, from the good old days in music 2007 thru 2017. Then his kids will be giving him grief about his music, then the circle of life will be complete.

Speak and Spell it's actually a very good first album... I wish I'd grown up with a dad that made me listen that type of music. [:)]
But synth pop is not very popular nowadays... those Next Wave bands that are popular are the ones that make rock music like Franz Ferdinand or Artic Monkeys and not the ones like Ladytron or Hot Chip... so she may be used to rock.
I was also like that with the exception that I liked many Tears for Fears songs... fact that I discovered later cos I didn't know the band behind them.

I love Speak & Spell. For my money, it's the album the contains the best selection of songs. (However, songs from other albums are much better than the ones in Speak & Spell, if you get my meaning.)

It's just so fun.

However, I think the Depeche Mode song that sounds most like a video game is "Everything Counts (Reprise)." The little synthesizer beat is something straight out of 8-bit Nintendo. (It can also be heard towards the end of "Everything Counts," but the reprised version has it by itself.)

It's THRILLING! It's GLORIFICENT! It's the best thing to happen to the Internet since the New Wave Outpost! Click away and taste unbridled euphoria!
