Wow...these are inspiring me to make a compilation cd. Actually, I could probably make a great 2-cd set from Blir's list alone! Here are a couple more:

Flock of Seagulls - Nighmares
Howard Devoto - The Rainy Season
Big Country - The Storm
ABC - Ocean Blue
Simple Minds - East At Easter
Pet Shop Boys - too many to mention...Dreaming of The Queen, This Must Be The Place, West End Girls, Kings Cross, October Symphony, Being Boring...the list goes on!

It seems that most atmospheric NW songs are created/recorded by synth groups or groups with keybord players. Any tunes without synths or keyboards?

The More I See You (a great cover)
Souvenir
The Beginning And The End

Empire of the Senses (fast-paced atmospheric)
(Has many more, just a blank right now...)

I thought of some of some of the songs that brought back that very mellow atmospheric sound and came up with these songs:
(Cruel) by Blancmange
( Damned Don't Cry) by Visage
( Leave in Silence) Depeche Mode
( Terror Couple Kill Colonel) Bauhaus
( Kamikaze) Thompson Twins
With all these contributions this would make a nice compilation. [^]

Lots of my choices have already been taken. Ditto to most of OMD and Icehouse. Others for me -

Echo & the Bunnymen - "Ocean Rain"

The The - "Kingdom of Rain"

Flash & the Pan - "Walking in the Rain" (Hmm, I'm noticing a pattern here)

Metro - "Jade"

Blondie - "Fade Away & Radiate"

Rachel Sweet - "New Age"

Telex - "More Than Distance" a.k.a. "Plus de Distance"

M - "Transmission"

Cock Robin - "Just Around the Corner"

Julee Cruise - "Falling"

Robert Plant - "In the Mood" okay, so it's not new wave but the song is definitely moody.

without diving into the entire 4AD or OMD catalog, I would add:

Area - "With Louise"
Heavenly Bodies - "Rains On Me"
Ryuichi Sakamoto - "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence"
Virginia Astley - "So Like Dorian" (just about anything by her)
Cranes - "Golden"
Death In June - "The Giddy Edge of Light" (actually, anything off this album)
Gary Numan - "Down in the Park"
Gene Loves Jezebel - "Stephen"

Wow, quite a turnout for these songs.

Now the next step is figuring out how to acquire them...

The Dream Academy was mentioned above...you really can't go wrong with any of their three albums, but try their third cd "A Different Kind Of Weather" for a great atmospheric listen. It's a got a nice combination of atmospheric mood and melody all the way though. (Out of print, but not too hard to find at used cd stores.)

I so agree with many of you who mentioned OMD, they really created the blueprints for very lush, atmospheric, natural, beautiful melodies. Too many songs to name and more and more, they are becoming my favorite 80's band.
