DO YOU THINK THESE BANDS ARE NEW WAVE/POWER POP ??

Postby georgie rockwood » Tue Nov 28, 2006 12:20 am

DO YOU GUYS THINK THE FOLLOWING BANDS ARE NEW WAVE,POWER POP,NEW WAVE JAZZ ??????? I REALLY FEEL THAT RICK SPRINGFIELD WOULD BE CONSIDERED NEW WAVE OR POWER POP.THE REASON IS THAT WHEN WORKING CLASS DOG FROM RICK SPRINGFIELD CAME OUT IN 1979,IT HAD VERY LITTLE LABEL SUPPORT AND OR PROMOTION AND SPRINGFIELD WENT ON THE ROAD IN 1979/1980 TO SUPPORT WORKING CLASS DOG,OPENING FOR SUCH NEW WAVE BANDS AS::::: GARY MYRICK & THE FIGURES,THE LAUGHING DOGS,HELMET BOY,THE INNOCENTS,THE ROMANTICS,THE CLASH (YES THE CLASH),THE SORROWS, LOVERBOY.AT THAT TIME,I CAN REMEMBER THAT ALOT OF NEW WAVE RADIO STATIONS WERE PLAYIN CUTS OFF THE WORKING CLASS DOG ALBUM AND OUR LOCAL NEW WAVE CLUB EVEN SPINNED A FEW CUTS OFF THE ALBUM TOO.WHEN WORKING CLASS DOG FINALLY TOOK OFF 2 1/2 YEARS LATER IN 1981 ALOT OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED BANDS OPENED FOR HIM. I CAN REMEMBER THE VAPORS OPENING UP FOR HIM TOO.......WHAT ABOUT SIMPLY RED ?????? I CAN REMEMBER BACK IN 1985 WHEN SIMPLY RED'S FIRST ALBUM,PICTURE BOOK CAME OUT,THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE WERE CALLING THEM NEW WAVE.THEY ALL DID COME FROM PRIEVIOUS PUNK BANDS.SIMPLY RED'S MUSIC WAS VERY SLICK AND SOMETIMES FUNKY THAT THEY WERE EVEN PUT INTO THAT NEW WAVE JAZZ STYLE THAT WAS EMERGING WITH BANDS LIKE,SWING OUT SISTER,STYLE COUNCIL,BLOW MONKEYS ETC.....I THINK SIMPLY RED IS STILL VERY NEW WAVE BUT HAVE MATURED OVER EVERY RELEASE AND ARE VERY SOPHISTICATED.WHAT ABOUT LEVEL 42???? LEVEL 42 HAD THAT NEW WAVE EDGE WITH SOME FUNK THROWN IN.WHAT ABOUT THE BAND,,DESMOND CHILD & ROUGE,WHO RELEASED 2 ALBUMS FOR CAPITOL IN 1978 & 1979 ???? DESMOND CHILD & ROUGE EVEN HAD A CUT ON A NEW WAVE/PUNK MOVIE SOUNDTRACK WHICH I CAN'T THINK OF RIGHT NOW & EVEN A CUT ON THE NEW WAVE/ROCK SOUNDTRACK TO THE FILM THE WARRIORS.NOW,DESMOND CHILD IS ONE OF MUSI'CS TOP SONGWRITERS & PRODUCERS. ONE ALBUM FROM 1985 THAT I THINK IS NEW WAVE AND WAY AHEAD OF IT'S TIME IS,,,, NOMO "THE GREAT UNKNOWN".........

DON'T FORGET THAT IN 1980, LOVERBOY'S FIRST ALBUM,,"LOVERBOY" WITH THE CUTS, "TURN ME LOOSE" & "THE KID IS HOT TONIGHT", WAS CONSIDERED BY CRITICS & RADIO TO BE NEW WAVE. NEW WAVE CLUBS & RADIO WERE EVEN PLAYIN,"TURN ME LOOSE". ALOT SAID IT HAD TO DO WITH THE ALBUM COVER & THE WAY THE BAND LOOKED AT THE TIME....

Gary Myrick's''Talking in stereo''is a great power pop song in antithesis with his whole album. For fans of Cars a true must listen.I was surprised to read about Helmet Boy,a very obscure rock band with a good album(definitely not new wave)but with a tight pub sound. The same with Laughing Dogs(more rock n' roll/rhythm and blues revivalists)and Rick Springfield with his aor pop sound. As for Innocents i'd better describe them ''indie pop'' with some complex arrangements.Really do you remember The Sumner(with one album in Asylum)and their uncategorised sound-somewhere between Velvets, new wave and prog?

I always wondered what catagory the Romantics fell under.
I remember when they all of the sudden had big poofy hair-do's. That kind of killed it for me.

I cant believe you listed the Clash. To me they will always be Punks [;)]

yeah...i know but it was an awesome concert when rick springfield opened up for them and it was weird to that later, the bass player for HELMET BOY,who springfield opened for would later join his band as bassist....

I do believe that a lot of projects including John Waite including The Babys, him solo, and even Bad English was in the Power-pop category if I'm not mistaken.

I don't think SIMPLY RED is either New Wave or Power Pop. I'd call them Adult Contemporary Pop.
