The Cars Greatest Song: My Best Friend's Girl :--)

Postby glokstadt » Tue Nov 28, 2006 2:49 pm

Another great Power Pop/New Wave era band to cut down to size, so to speak. This time around I wanted to make sure I got all the tunes, so I'm doing it by album released chronologically, and then some B-sides that were not on any LP. I hope I got them all this time, but I'm sure someone will point one out I forgot! Good grief, as Charlie Brown would say... All right then, take away, and please enjoy. [:D]

BTW, I love all the side chatter when we're discussing great/good albums and songs, so here's to djcraig, Panaorama, and plagiarism as we debate and cut The Cars to the ultimate best song (at least at this moment, seeing as Charlie Don't Surf is the best Clash song!).

Oh, yeah, The Rules, in case everyone, or those who are new, don't know. Drop your least favorite song and put it clearly on top with anything your want to say about that song, and then relist what's left for the next person. Last song left is the best song that we have indicated for right now at the NWO. Have FUN!

Can we make it easier and just drop the entire Door To Door lp?[:D]

Anyway--I'll weigh in on this later when the pickings are better.

Does anybody else think these get tiresome with the WHOLE catalog? I say stick your nect out and pick 50 or less best songs as a starting point and let the rancor begin over what you might've missed...it's kinda part of the fun.

I agree, when there's too much choice it keeps a lot of people out. It doesn't seem fair of me to cut songs I don't know - especially when there are about 30 unknown to me. It's just a little overwhelming, I don't play until the end & by that time - all my faves are gone.

When I did the Blondie one I intentionally kept it to 35 just so things would be recognizable & the game would move along quickly. (And hopefully everyone could chime in.)

That's just my two cents, take it for what it's worth.

You mean like when people suddenly at the beginning vote off "Lost In The Supermarket" and "London Calling" . . . (lucky Devo was already done, or there may have been payback . . . )

I agree on the 50 song rule, unless someone astutely points out one missed a classic that MUST be voted off . . . [:p]

Okay "Shake It Up" may have been a big hit . . . but I mainly remember it for having what I call the 80's hyper voice on the mike, that practically sounds the same as the J Geils Band's "Centerfold". Then there was the video(only models disguised as oddball people picked up on the street--my Dad who watched it back then asked if this was some new way of picking up hookers in cognito), and between the two I'd pick "Centerfold". Sorry.
