Cheap Trick? Kids Stuff?

Postby ben_at_work » Wed Nov 29, 2006 3:31 am

In Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Mike Damone is trying to sell Cheap Trick tickets to some girl who refers to them and or their music as "Kids Stuff". Damone, either truely offended or trying to make the sale busts out with a decent Robin Zander impression "I want you to want me, The Dream Police na na na na na na na na,Your Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weirrrrddd, surrender" complete with air drum solo.

I've always loved Cheap trick but this got me to thinking?
Had they gone soft at the time of filming Fast Times (1982) Hmmmmm!!

I love both Cheap Trick and Fast Times. Some rambling thoughts on your interesting question:

"One on One" featuring the ballad "If You Want My Love" was released in 1982, perhaps too late to influence the script. I lost interest in their new releases after Dream Police ('79). Other than the radio ballads we're all sick of, I don't know what their 80's & beyond output really sounds like. Maybe calling them soft & washed up in '82 was about right, but no doubt they would have put on a killer show in '82.

Also, the Budokan album ('79) forever associated Cheap Trick in some people's minds with screaming Japanese teenyboppers, which may account for the "kid's stuff" tag.

Good call scram. I stopped paying too much attention to them at some point in the 80's as well. I remember I put the bumper sticker that came with the budokan album on my bedroom wall cause mom wouldn't let me put it on the Bronco. I guess my mom did seem a litlle wierd [;)][:D]

I think you're just reading too much into it, Ben. Cheap Trick was still very cool at the time and 1982's One On One was a kickass album. The chick in the bleachers was just ignorant of their brilliance as were far too many folks at the time.

So was the chick in the bleachers meant to be ignorant or was the screenwriter ignorant?

The character was meant to be ignorant. I think. Maybe we're all overthinking it now. [:D] Damn you Ben! See what happens when you try to add value??? [;)]

I've applied some Cartesian thought to this. My conclusions are that the writer (one famous Cameron Crowe) was taking a loving yet self-deprecating look at how fancies and fashions constantly move out and in and out again of favor. She was meant to look ignorant but not in any mean or disdainful way - that whimsical part of her is in all of us, even you or me or Ben! My god, it's fucking brilliant!!!

I think it's because Cheap Trick were most famous from 78 to 80. That puts this 1982 girl in junior high during their heyday. She may have been into them then, but unfortunatly, as you move to high school, any music from the pre & early teen years is rendered "kid's stuff" and totally unhip! (Particularly when there are intense and visionary new groups like Culture Club and Wham to expand your minds...)

Was she just trying to get rid of Damone? Folks were saying bad things about him, because they didn't know him like Ratner knew him. Hmm, what does that mean? [:D]

So René Descartes is drinking at a bar. The bartender comes up to him and says, "Closing time M. Descartes. Would you like one for the road?" Descartes considers this for a moment, then replies, "I think not."

And he vanishes.

Yeah, there were a lot of "Food for thought" moments in that movie. Don't even get me started on the kid with the led zeppelin shirt in search of Blue Oyster Cult tickets and if BOC even toured in 82. [:p]

Rene Descartes had nothing on Pierre Bézier [:p]
