'Foreign' Electro-Wave Comps...

'Foreign' Electro-Wave Comps...

Postby Frau_Blucher » Sun Sep 24, 2006 2:08 am

By 'foreign'...you know what I mean.

Anyway, I've found a few of these now and am discoverying that they're a great way to get a peak into huge swaths of bands the I never had much visibility on. The music is definitely not like mainstream american/english new wave. Always a bit more electro. Some of it shit. Some of it very very cool. I can recommend these that I've recently heard...

Transmission: French Cold Wave 81-89
Best of Electronic Music Limited (DE)
Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep? (another DE release)

Any others anyone can recommend?

Thanks for the post. I'm flying to London on Wednesday and have reserved two days just for record shopping. I'll keep my eyes open for these.

Lucky you! I'm sure there's a hell of a lot more than these too. Make sure you check for concerts as well!

Great thing about London is that there is constantly something happening. Last year we wandered into a local flavor-of-the-month bar/restaurant and Terry Hall and Damon Albarn were DJing, followed by Hall performing with Mushtaq.

I have not yet purchased BIPP. I have "So Young But So Cold" and cannot recommend it enough, same with "New Deutsch" that DJ Hell put out a few years ago.

If you like synthpop and a little bit experimental, you will like the Bippp comp. It's well selected and even the more unknown stuff is quiet good. I like it much more then "Transmission", "So young but so cold" etc...
Another comp for fans of electronic new wave music might be the

ELECTRONIC RENAISSANCE compilation, which is releases by enfant terrible records from netherlands. It features only new bands, but they all sound really much new wave / minimal synthpop.

Other well compiled comps are:

BEL80
series of 10 CDs
- 1 comp for each year in the 80s with belgium new wave music...
with bands like TELEX, RED ZEBRA, THE WEATHERMEN, THE NEON JUDGEMENT, POESIE NOIRE, REVOLTING COCKS, FRONT 242, etc...
-- still available --

NEW WAVE CLUB CLASS-X
series of 8 CDs + best of and german class-x
- search discogs for tracklists, nearly every comp is really great and represent the 80s club scene in belgium / europe very well !!!
-- Hard to find !!! --

If I should choose between all these "best-of an era" compilations I would really take the BIPPP and would like to have all the NEW WAVE CLUB CLASS-X (I miss 2...)
