This isnt Rock or New Wave but the Madonna vs Cyndi Lauper is very hot in our country. [:D]

<p align="justify">I feel like I need to include Depeche Mode. They were The Stones of New Wave. Who the hell were The Beatles of New Wave?! Probably NewOrder, even if I don't want to pare them with The Beatles. If not NewOrder, then Duran Duran. Hey, on mere Pop cultural recognition alone, D2 covered a lot bases... somewhat reminiscent of The Beatles' breakthrough over television in North America.

D-Mode...yeah, they do resonate as being a part of this don't they? Their uniqueness of character has to bring them into the discussion. There likely wasn't a clear-cut new wave Beatles or Stones. Lotsa Kings for the Day.

But the Clash and New Order are my personal Stones and Beatles for sure. [^]

In my opinion, Duran Duran and INXS... weird thing that nobody has thought of this yet.
Two bands with two styles and attitudes that are so different which have huge loads of fans and were on top of everything in the 80s.

Of course, we all've been involved in New Order vs Depeche Mode discussions... but they aren't my Beatles & Stones of nw... they are my two loves. [;)]

Duran Duran and INXS... both bands were huge and they are completely different in terms of attitude and style.
Of course, we ALL've been involved in DM vs New Order discussions.. but they aren't my Beatles & Stones... they are the music that's inside me. [;)]
If you live in Argentina, then it's a Virus vs Soda Stereo thing... they were kind of the Beatles and Stones of NW.
That's Virus:

This is Soda Stereo:

How come I find myself humming They Might Be Giants' "XTC vs. Adam Ant" while reading this thread?

Can't really pin it down to two...though U2 & Depeche Mode seemed to have the most "Screamers of the Week" on WLIR-FM when I Interned there. Has the Cure even been mentioned?

Longevity-wise, it's probably D.Mode and Duran. D.Mode wins that war hands down, musically

But I remember when it was Duran Vs Spandau and how everyone was making a big fuss when they worked together on Band Aid! Wow! Simon Le Bonehead and the Kemp brothers in the same room, not to mention Tony Hadley! :)

Personally speaking, I don't think that there was a Beatles and Stones-type 'rivalry' in the '80s. There were bands that could have been contenders but many fell be the wayside by the time the decade came to a close. The Clash could've kicked anyone's ass...up intil Cut The Crap came out. That album had as much balls as the third Culture Club album, which was horrific to say the least. (Yes, war is stupd, but that song, 'The War Song' or whatever it was called, was so bad, it was probably responsible for starting a few wars in the wake of it's release).

Duran Duran were the Beatles of the '80s and U2 were and always will be their biggest enemies. Forget that whole Spandau Ballet business -- that was just smoke and mirrors dreamed up by the two camps to drum up publicity for the two. They were IRL close friends and associates. And Depeche Mode and Duran Duran shared so many of the same fan bases and were played at the same clubs (and regarded equally, especially in the '80s) that Depeche Mode could not be considered in any disharmonious state vs. Duran Duran. U2, on the other hand, are very much Duran Duran's antagonists, and I would be very surprised if the two share even a small percentage of their fan bases. That would be one Venn diagram that would not overlap, or maybe overlap at the very smallest edges.

I agree with Ollie on this. I listened to so many different styles of music that were kind of thrown into the NW bucket that I can't recall any rivalries standing out.

I want to say REM but they still haven't peaked to the point of being the "IT" band with massive success, but definitely up there in longevity and consistency. The 3 bands below deserve to be in this category.

*Depeche Mode - consistent arena tours in their career but still with alternative appeal

*Blondie - Shortlived but the domination they had from 79-81 transcended NW. Remember Blondiemania? I can't think of any band besides Beatles with "mania" associated with it.

*U2 - Probably the biggest success of alternative music ever, outgrew NW beginnings but still very much NW in spirit.
