NW Songs that Make Your Eyes Tear Up

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

Postby Spaz » Sun Dec 31, 2006 11:57 am

"Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo
"Politics Of Dancing" by Reflex
"The Fanatic" by Felony

These songs make me cry because they were successful while hundred if not thousands of other great '80s songs remain unwanted, unknown or unloved.

Life is never fair.

P.S. I do like Kajagoogoo apart from that track, but the other two bands could be Mr. Mister in disguise....

The Church - Destination, Ripple, Milky Way
Marc Almond - Tears Run Rings
Cocteau Twins - I Wear Your Ring
Prefab Sprout - Bonny, Appetite
Dream Academy - It'll Never Happen Again (actually about half of their songs qualify!)

<p align="justify">There was a time when all I would listen were these sad New Wave songs. It's been a few years since I've gotten to them. There are quite a few standards, though, that remind me of better times, or of someone I liked, or maybe it's just the sound of the tune itself. Here goes nuttin':

- "Don't Answer Me" by The Alan Parsons Project (not New Wave)
- "Ghosts" by Japan
- "In A Manner Of Speaking" by Tuxedomoon (or as covered by Martin L. Gore)
- "Just Another High" by Roxy Music
- "Never, Never" by The Assembly (it's a very wimpy song, but I like it)
- "Oscillate Wildly" by The Smiths
- "A Question Of Lust," "World Full Of Nothing," and "If You Want" by Depeche Mode (lotta DeMode, really)
- "Runes And Men" by Death In June
- "Wicked Game (Instrumental)" by Silvertone, feat. Chris Isaak
- "Words" by F.R. David

The first time I heard "On Islands" by New Musik, I thought it was very moving with the child's narration at the end. It doesn't do that to me any more.

For the most part I can't think of any New Wave songs that make me tear up. I can think of music from other genres.

I always get teary eyed when I listen to Saint Etienne's "Bedfordshire" off their '05 release Songs from Turnpike House. Mainly because I think of my son at that age.

"Asleep"--The Smiths
It's further sad for me because my stepdad died after being in the hospital for months on New Year's Eve. Sorry to be a downer.

It happened last year, not last night. Just reread this again. Sorry about that.

Somebody by Depeche Mode. It's just so. So Beautiful and emotional. And lots of songs by The Cure make me feel that way too.

I have to differ with the couple of DMode "Somebody" mentions here. That song just seems too purpose-built to be "the emo song". It's so cloyingly sickening to me that I immediately have to slam it off if it comes on. There's so little art to it that the lyrics could easily have been penned by some 90s boy band. Blech!

Just my IMHO though, as I'll quite easily turn around and agree with the likes of "Tears" and "Letter to Elise". [:I] Those at least have some wordcraft, some style...although 'tear up' is a stretch for any new wave song for me. Now, put on Gladys Knight and the Pips with "Best Thing that Ever Happened to Me"?? Fuggedabaaadit. [:0]

There are a few that I associate with my lost love JD. (Y'know, after "High Fidelity" was released as a film I came close to using that as an excuse to track him down[:I] but I didn't because I was getting my teeth fixed and didn't want him to see me in braces at 34).

Yaz, Too Pieces
Thompson Twins, Hold Me Now
Cure, Lovecats (It was 20 years before I could listen to that without flinching)
AFOS, Wishing
Eurhythmics, Here Comes the Rain Again

Then there are some that I don't associate with any particular trauma/drama or nostalgia, but I find moving nonetheless for lyrics and melody:
Smiths, There is a Light that Never Goes Out (that ukelele video really worked for me)
David Bowie, Life on Mars (Love the Seu Jorge cover)
Aztec Camera, We Could Send Letters
Japan, Nightporter

Blir, I'm surprised at you. You need to turn up the sensitivity on your irony detector. "Somebody" is a parody of exactly the kind of song you speak of. They even give it away at the end:

"Though things like this
Make me sick
In a case like this
I'll get away with it"

See, I didn't take it as irony. It looks like they're self-servingly excusing themselves while still doing it, especially in light of the droves of teenage girls who got all weepy over it. I still cringe after all these years. It's like Pilate washing his hands and blaming the Jews but doing the deed anyway. Okay, maybe that's an OT exageration. [:I]
