What's the deal with Split Enz?

What's the deal with Split Enz?

Postby skinnytie » Fri Jan 05, 2007 12:38 pm

As we all (I hope) know by now, the Split Enz catalog was remastered (some remixed, and some with bonus tracks) and released. However, after doing some searching, it looks like these are going to go out-of-print (the remastered "True Colors" seems to be out of print already), with new reissues popping up at the end of January! Anyone know the reason why? Will the bonus tracks still be the same, if at all there? Any light on this subject would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

I know they will be touring Australia this summer... is that effecting re-releases, so they can release then??? Don't know, might be.

The versions that were released to coincide with the tour were in digipaks. The reissues will be standard jewelcase.

There were some problems with tracklistings on the digis that will hopefully be squared away on the jewelcase versions.

From what I gather, then, it's only the packaging that's changing and not the content on the discs themselves? This reminds me of another thread around the board about the remastered Siouxsie & the Banshees discs being re-released to standard jewel case from digipak. In SatB's case, the thread went on to say that remastering mistakes on the digipak reissues would be corrected for the versions coming out in the jewel cases. Is this a new marketing trend or something?

By the way, if anyone does get the remastered version of "Corroboree" (which was otherwise known as "Waiata" here in the States), BEWARE! The songs have been remixed, and some sound like completely different versions that what you're used to. Even the bonus track, "In the Wars", was remixed from the original vinyl. One can only hope they'll go back to the original mixes for this latest reissue. After all, why mess with perfection? [:)]

The band were never happy with that mix of Corroboree since it was essentially a rush job. The band recorded/mixed the album 'tween tours and didn't feel it was as good as it could have been.

I for one LOVE this album to death, but the original mix was too tinny, and everything was just sort of thrown together with a slap of echo on top. Sonically, it just sounds really flat.

The new version is amazing and sounds like the real true follow-up to True Colours and the perfect bridge between that album and Time And Tide. The vocals are crisp, clear and up front with no echo to drown them out. Stunning.

Same thing with Frenzy. They feel the guy who produced/mixed it was a hack and have always wanted to go back and release it the way they originally intended it to sound.

I would recommend that everyone does what I did and keep the orginal CD reissues of Frenzy and Coroborree plus buy the new ones

Remixing from vinyl is impossible.

Please cite your source on this, I'd like to trace this error back to the source.

They either remixed from the 16 or 24 track tape, or remastered from vinyl, but did NOT remix from vinyl.

Sorry about that, I didn't mean to imply that they re-mixed it from the vinyl. What I meant is that the version of the song that was originally on the vinyl was remixed for the CD, whatever that source might be (I don't believe this one song ever saw the light of day on CD before, and I would have liked to have had the original version of it on the remaster).
