I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Psychedelic Furs yet. And on a side note, the saxophonist from The Waitresses (Mars Williams) had performed with the Furs after The Waitresses had called it quits.

X-Ray Spex was probably the only punk band to use it, it was prominently on display on the entire "Germ-Free Adolescents" album, their only album. It really added a lot of class to their agressive punk sound.

It's a good one. It's interesting that even hard-boiled acts like Lords of the New Church had some good sax. I'd put the one from Open Your Eyes up there too.

<br>Im about to buy a used sax ...ive never played, but I think I could do it well enough pretty quick to add a different sound for my new bands recordings....

I really like Spear Of Destinys use of the sax on their album 'Grapes Of Wrath' (a band and album I rarely if ever see mentioned on this site)..

Of course Roxys use of the sax is amazing....

So which kind: soprano, alto, tenor, baratone, or bass? I've played them all, including a C-melody, and those haven't been popular for a long time...

Most all the 2-Tone bands used saxophones, X-Rey Specs's LP, Fear ("NY's Alright If You Like Saxophones!," Haircut 100, OMD (Martin Cooper played), and the ultimate McKay from Roxy Music!

Indochine used sax in the 80es as well, played by Dimitri Bodianski, can be heard on all of the early albums. even The Cure used sax (Give me it).
to be honest, I don't mind the absence of it in recent days, never have been a huge fan of the sound + with many songs looking in retrospect it seemed to be kind of forced into it, cause the bands had a sax player in their lineup. with some songs it works well, others I am not too sure about.

SomebodySomewhere beat me to it--I like the sax on Foreigner's "Urgent". I was just listening to it last night.

Also the "New York mix" of Psychedelic Furs' "Heartbeat" is killer for some great sax! One of my fave songs EVER.

Andy Hamilton played some great sax on Duran Duran recordings. Wesley MacGoogahan (sp?) played with Hazel O'Connor, The English Beat, and even The Anti-Nowhere League. Classix Nouveaux had sax as the lead instrument on their instrumental "Chamin Chagrin".

Retro_NRG beat us both to it!

Keeping things in the family, New Man's lead singer, Scott Gilman, actually joined Foreigner in the early '90s as their sax player. They had another brassy hit in Boston with "Bad Boys," which was this kind of Caribbean-flavored party song, but fell victim to office politics and pathetic promotion (and the most ghastly album jacket art you could imagine) and tanked nationally. They deserved a lot better.

Sex Execs' three saxophonists (Sean Slade, Russ Gershon and Jim Fitting) were brilliant, and played off each other perfectly in concert. Then there was Lulu Temple, the precursor to Smash Palace, who had a few saxophonists -- and choked on them.

I've been thinking the same thing about the lack of sax and other horns. I was just listening to Hunters & Collectors and thinking how great the horns sounded. It was nice to hear sax on INXS' latest album.
