Went to IKEA this weekend, they were playing all '80s artists, many new wave tunes, I herd U2, Altered Images, Thompson Twins, Big Country, Wall of Voodoo, The Waitresses, Adam & The Ants, a bunch more I can't remember... I really enjoyed my trip there this time because I usually do not!

Ditto your entire post! That piped-in 80's music made my annual Ikea trek less sucky than usual! [8D]
[/quote]

Totally agree! Less sucky this time around... only came in for the special offer of 99-cent breakfast deal, guarenteed personality!!! I'm all lost at my IKEA store, can no longer shop happily, will have to go to COSTCO, and save on bulk packets of tea... oh no! [:p]

There's a Burger King we go to about once a week (I know, I know...) and whoever's in charge of the music that is played has excellent taste. We always hear Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, The Cure, etc. It's pretty cool.

When I was in college, I worked at K-Mart one summer and we had the K-Mart Radio Network that played while grubby people wandered about. I heard lots of 80s pop that summer [:)]

I once heard Echo & The Bunnymen's "The Cutter" at a Metro PCS cellphone store. Surprised, I was.

"The Cutter" (same as above post)at our local Giant Eagle supermarket followed by "Electric Avenue". My son works in the deli so I went over there and he instantly knew why I was looking at him.

The music is piped in thru a subscription service. It seems like they have settled on that channel. Makes shopping a whole lot better.

The music you listen to is the soundtrack of your life.

Meniscus, thaisI that I can remember.I have girl you want by devo as one of my ring tones and the other day i was standing in line at our grocery store and the ring tone came on fairly loud and a guy behind me said "Devo Wow". It was a moment that was shared in checkout lane.

It seems like everytime I go to Price Chopper (a grocery store,) they're playing Rock Lobster. I think it's funny, since most of the patrons are really old ladies. They must wonder what the hell the store is playing..."damn rock music!"
I remember going to Las Vegas in the early 80's, and while watching my Dad play blackjack at 3 in the morning at the Flamingo hotel, I heard coming over the hotel's speakers XTC's Black Sea album (yes, they were playing the whole album). It was hard to hear it though, they had the volume really low, but it was a surprise!

More recently, the local Bed, Bath & Beyond on 6th Ave. in Manhattan plays some decent stuff over their piped-in music. I was about to leave and "Half a Boy, Half a Man" by Nick Lowe started playing! I stayed just to hear the song, and left after it, when "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama came on.

So how long did you stay??? Anything cool after Bananarama??? Did you linger on for another hour? Inquiring minds want to know...

Unfortunately, my memory doesn't serve me well beyond those two songs. I think a Bon Jovi tune was in there as well (the piped-in music was definitely set in the 80's), but I remember it not being the usual stuff you'd expect a store of this type to play. Next time I'm there, I'll have to pay more attention. [:(]

Sometimes the local Qdoba has on a piped in new wave station and I've heard these among others:

"Only A Lad" by Oingo Boingo
"Give Me Back My Man" by The B-52's, and
"Don't Change" by INXS.

Also, in one of the malls around here, I've heard Muzak versions of:

"Saved By Zero" by The Fixx, and astonishingly:

"Here's Where The Story Ends" by The Sundays.

Amazing!

More by luck than judgment, here am I.

I'm thinking we might get a decent run of piped-in NW nostalgia. The first half of the 90s was all grunge and gangsta rap, and I don't think stores want to play a bunch of aggressive music. They don't want agitated customers--it's bad for business. Eventually, though, we'll be subjected to lots of N'Sync and Britney, but by then the iPod chips implanted in our brains will be able to tune that crap out. [:D]

Yum, The Yardhouse, 300 beers on tap, almost all micro-brews... lived in Long Beach, CA for 25+ years, and was down there sucking on a yard o' beer many a times! [:p]
Well Christmas brings out all of those gems tucked away in the closet. A station in my area always plays REM's "Toyland," which I've been trying to get my hands on for years...but it only went out to their fan club members.

I work in a fine dining restaurant on the outskirts of Philadelphia. On Tuesdays my manager tunes our satelite radio to the big 80's/ college rock station ( a big change from jazz muzak or chamber music). It amuses me to watch little old "main line" ladies sip their bisque to "I eat Cannibals" or "My Sharronah".[}:)]
The best part is, sometimes they play some real obscure stuff I haven't even thought about in years! Joy!
