Best New Wave Band (Depeche Mode period!!!!)

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

In terms of longevity & quality I'll have to say Elvis Costello

In terms of overall influence and foresight I give it to The Clash
who blended elements of Reggae, Ska, Dub & early Hip-Hop into their music years before it became mainstream.
My Top 10 NW bands:

01) Soft Cell
02) New Musik
03) Y.M.O. (Yellow Magic Orchestra)
04) Simple Minds (up until 1984)
05) Cocteau Twins
06) Yazoo ('Yaz' for the Usa)
07) Wolfgang Press
08) Depeche Mode
09) Dead Can Dance
10) Human League

But this is from my 'European perspective' ... as most people on this forum approach it from a more 'Usa perspective' i guess.
Cheers !.

I Remember when as a kid..I read on some magazines, those bands like Softcell, Simple minds, Psych Furs, Tears for Fears and even Banarama (?) were all taking shots at DM? Being so soft, a novelty and not being taken seriously.. whoa, where are they now??? While DM Fills up stadiums around the world, still making awesome records. and selling.. DM still stands and survived the music evolution..
way beyond than just to be called a 80's band.. any other (have been) NW band still makin' noise beside DM?

Kraftwerk will always be the Father of Synth-pop.. w/o Kraftwerk there will be no DM.. w/o DM there will be no Camouflage, Redfalg, Cetu Javu, Celebrate the nun, God lives underwater..

DeMode's oeuvre dwarves any other act in the genre. I'd list Japan as a runner-up mainly because I'm still of the belief they created and polished New Romantic in 1979.

Depending on one's view of what is actually New Wave, here are mine:

1. The Cure
2. New Order/Joy Division
3. The Psychedelic Furs
4. Echo and the Bunnymen
5. The Pet Shop Boys
6. Depeche Mode
7. Ultravox/Visage
8. The Alarm
9. Love and Rockets
10.Cetu Javu

While those cover a broad range of genres, all of them hit their peak between 1977 and 1992.

that's a naive thing to say. I think the fact that they are British and get lots of promotion has a lot to do with their popularity as well.

for example I think A-Ha, Alphaville, Camouflage released even better albums that DM, and still do, but living in US I never even hear of them, but DM still gets on VH1

New Order

Maybe DM's only match besides The Cure.. New order's dance track could rival's DM's remixes and so on.. The only thing New Order cannot match is DM's Progressive Longevity.. Now DM use (blues)Guitar and live drums, they just took there post-New wave game to the next level.. Stadium Arena Synth Rock!!!!

Well, by and large, I think a-ha has better music than Depeche Mode. They only get flack for being that "one-hit wonder," but go listen to any of their albums (with an open mind, not expecting to hear "Take On Me" clones), and you might just get blown away. Depeche Mode's Playing The Angel was good, but a-ha's Analogue, released a month later, is more nuanced, introspective, and delivers that a-ha oomph they've been perfecting all of these years.

That's Funny.. A-ha had a new Album?? when did it came out? how come it never get's played here in US? DM always get's played whenever they release a new material, and definitely played in Europe (enjoying a bigger status than in US)....
I like A-ha, there probably the Biggest one-hit-wonder (period)

On the brightside.. they won a Grammy w/ take on me!!!

Word. "Analogue" is excellent. A-Ha is such an underrated band. I come completely unhinged when people accuse them of being a one-hit wonder. [:(!]
