Best New Wave Band (Depeche Mode period!!!!)

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

If we consider guitar bands as New Wave, no discussion for me:

1st. THE CHURCH
2nd. JOY DIVISION
3rd. SOFT CELL
4th. THE HUMAN LEAGUE
5th. ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN

As for the rest, I should have some trouble to priorize some over others

¿Depeche Mode, you say? For my tastes, they never improved their first two records...[^][:D][:p]

Besides, a-ha had TWO hits: Along with "Take On Me," "The Sun Always Shines On TV" made the charts.

So "one-hit wonder" is way off base regardless of your point of view.

One day, a-ha fans will exact their revenge...

The Church.. are they still around? I never heard anything from them since Under the milky way.. Anywho, If DM not improved from their frist 2 records, would they still be filling-up stadiums around the globe? fan wise, DM's cult following dwarfs those bands you mentioned all together [}:)]

Most Synthpop bands the were big in the 80's tends to follow releases when DM comes out w/ new album.. Just to ride the huge wave that is DM..

Hey Anonymous,

I realize that the point of this thread is to stir things up but still....

Ok you love DM. I get that. But, honestly, who the hell cares how many "hits" an artist have had? That't the yardstick by which you measure if a band is good or not? Hell the vast majority of my favorite bands never had a top 40 hit in the U.S. or in the U.K. And honestly I don't give a rat's ass. In all seriousness if that was my only benchmark, my musical tastes would be bleak indeed...[xx(]

¿Still around? [:(!] Not sure... they only released like 18 records more since then... [;)]

They have soooo many songs after the milky way that it would be too long to explain.

About DM, note that I wrote FOR MY TASTES. I love naive basic synth-pop... and talking about this... they never did better than in their first records. I don't mind if they fill stadiums or not. Phil Collins did, and is... what it is.

The Cure and The Church are excellent choices but I have to pick Depeche Mode.

You got that right Bro. who cares how many hits an artist has???
It's all about personal taste.. I mean DM would probably end-up like most 80's band (now extinct) if they didn't put out awesome records.. Which band would have a better lyricist than M.L. Gore??
i.e. Blaspehmous Rumors!! hunting synths (industrial-frist to use) samples and atmospheric edgeness over Synth Bands.. how many bands would could make such records like that?? OMD, Human League, Petshop boys, Erasure, Camouflage, New order, A-ha and w/ all due respect Kraftwerk.. they never could match DM's music/lyrics wise..

A difficult question. From their punk beginnings through dramatic changes to the Phantasmagoria era, the Damned have probably kept me entertained the most over the years.

still THE CURE is the greatest Gothic New Wave band ever...they started in the 70's until now they're still playing and composing great albums...

Duran Duran is not New Wave...They are more on the New Romantic genre.

Van Halen is a Rock group...

cheers!

Human League, not quite because of their music, but because of their influence on the genre. Quite hard to pick only one, though.
