Magazine/Howard Devoto reissues

Magazine/Howard Devoto reissues

Postby Surly » Mon Jan 08, 2007 4:58 am

From remembertheeighties.com:

Magazine's four studio albums Real Life, Secondhand Daylight, The Correct Use Of Soap and Magic, Murder And The Weather are to be reissued with bonus tracks on March 5th along with Howard Devoto's solo album Jerky Versions Of The Dream."

The Devoto is one of my "holy grail" titles - so glad that is finally being reissued. I understand it was out on CD in the early '90s, but I never knew about it until too late.

Wow! I'm sure a lot of members of this board (myself included) will be happy to see that "Jerky Versions of a Dream" is getting reissued!

Just curious, any idea about what the bonus tracks might be for the Magazine CD's? It seems to be that "Scree" was pretty complete for non-lp A and B sides; I don't know if anything was missing from it. And I see that the live "Play" isn't going to be included with these reissues.

Thanks for the info, Surly!

This is becoming a great time for reissues! First Kissing The Pink, the Our Daughters Wedding, then Polyrock and now finally Devoto. Someone out there is listening to my prayers! Now if we can only get them to reissue "Urgh! A Music War" and Skafish my list will be (almost) complete...

Scree was indeed complete.

Getting the four Magazine albums, plus Scree, and Play (optional mediocre live album) is the complete Magazine. Nothing else remains un-CD'd from what was released during their lifetime.

BUT...

There is also a 3-CD box set that includes ALL of Scree, all of Play (except 3 tracks.. grrr...), the complete Peel Sessions, and a few selected LP tracks. Definitely worth getting instead of Scree.

So...

Unless they dug up some new, unheard, archival material, there will be nothing previously unavailable on CD brought to disc on these reissues.

And I'll bet the mastering is over-limited like on so many other recent reissues. Bleh.

Does anyone know what happened to the Devoto CD? It is now listed as unavailable on amazon.co.uk. (Glad I didn't sell my old "Jerky" CD...)

I've been keeping an eye out for it at my local store that carries imports, and no sign of it yet either. Ditto about not selling my old copy, which I finally found on ebay last year after a long search. I hope they still reissue it as the sound could use an upgrade...

I had it on order from Ideal Copy, but they just refunded my money yesterday, stating it was "canceled/delayed." This is very disappointing...I really wanted this CD!!! Now I'm going to add in a bunch of sad emoticons...

Is it me o the remaster of Jerky Version is not very good?. I mean, when I try to play the cd a little bit loud the drums have a lot of distortion.

I thought it only moderately improved the sound from the original cd release...although it's still great to have all the extras and at least some improved sound quality.
