as per discogs.com:

Label: ZTT
Catalog#: ZCIQ 3
Format: Cassette
Country: UK
Released: 01 Jul 1985

A1 Dream Within A Dream (8:03)
A2 The Murder Of Love (5:13)
A3 Jewel (3:07)
A4 Duel (4:41)
B1 p: Machinery (3:50)
B2 Sorry For Laughing (3:27)
B3 Dr. Mabuse (First Life) (4:57)
B4 The Chase (Lied) (4:05)
B5 The Last Word / Strength To Dream (2:59)

apparently i had the uk cassette. how i got it in smalltown south texas is beyond me, but this is the cassette i had. years later, when it was time to buy the cd i assumed the 9+ minute version was the version i wanted of "dream" because of the instrumental breakdown in the beginning. i was wrong. it is the shorter version that has the beginning i prefer. the "extended" version goes right into the drums and bass after the spoken intro.

the '87 cd (which i never bought, not having a player until '93, and by then it was out of print) had this mix it seems, and "dr. mabuse" without the "strength to dream" mixed in.
but i had found cid-26, the uk cd from '85 (and how, i don't know) and this one had the 9+ version. not what i wanted, but i vowed to find it one day. in the late '90's ztt put out a sampler and it was on that. i was thrilled. so a few more years go by and i'm like: hey, i should get the whole cd. i get the one from 2003. go figure, it's the one with the 9+ minute mix. i am resigned to just not having that original cassette configuration (and yes, i could have been more diligent about it- looked at times better, done some research).

oh, and guess which version of "secret wish" is on itunes?
for the most part, it's the version i always wanted- although the version of "jewel" on it is the rough cut, with claudia yelling out the vocals. the cassette was a shorter instrumental with some random screaming and the vocal countoff. who knows. i'm more confused than ever. ha!

EDIT:
apparently, if i wanted the shorter version of "jewel" i should have got the 2003 uk version, or the 2005 us release. i wonder why itunes has an import version (could be the 2000 uk version, or canadian pressing)
ugh, i don't care anymore.

More on the releases of "A Secret Wish". I have the lp (ISL1048 - second pressing according to the listed site). I picked up a copy (finally) on CD last year. I didn't want the release with DVD as I don't have a region-free player. Ended up with ZTT118CD release. It lists the times more or less the same as on the lp, with the addition of Frozen Faces. The major difference upon playing it was the version of Jewel. The track listing (on the back cover) lists it as 3:09, which would be similar to the lp version (mostly instrumental. In reality it is the "rough cut" clocking in at 6:22. Other than that, most tracks are within seconds, except for "Sorry For Laughing", which is a minute longer on CD.

edit: I thought I'd just add the times listed on the back of my CD case (ZTT118), with the times shown on my CD player in brackets:

8:04 (8:04)
5:16 (5:19)
3:09 (6:22)
4:47 (4:49)
4:22 (4:25)
3:50 (3:50)
3:27 (4:27)
5:03 (5:05)
4:05 (4:05)
3:00 (3:03)

/edit

A couple of years ago, my copy of The Beat's "I Just Can't Stop It", started skipping in the player, in my car (played fine on other players). When I replaced it, I ended up with the London Records 1999 remaster, which is missing "Tears Of A Clown" and "Ranking Full Stop". I leave the remaster for playing in the car, my original copy gets played in other players.

Yup, The English Beat is a great example of a case where it's nice to hold onto the original cds. In addition to the missing tracks on the reissue of "Just Can't Stop It" (I assume they used the original UK version for the remaster), the remaster of "W'happen" has completely different cover art than the original us cd.

The joke's on you. The Repertoire 20th Anniversary release (CD+DVD) is all region, NTSC.
