Simple Minds - Themes 1-5 box set on 6-17-08!

Postby ed4ad » Wed Jun 04, 2008 3:15 pm

Hi,

I'm new here.

Does anybody know what the tracklisting is for theme 5 ?

Are the "old" themes 1-4 the same as the "new" themes 1-4 ?

Thnx

Think i will give this a miss. Doesn't even say if they are remastered or not and looks like the mistakes are still on there. They are asking £109.99 for it on Amazon is seriously just taking the piss.

Someone, Somewhere should be fixed. The individual CD5 release of it has the extended version.

I know it's expensive, but the Simple Minds Themes Box Set is massive and beautifully packaged. We just got out first shipment this week and i'm very tempted to get one for myself.

The vast majority of the songs on Themes are either slightly extended (60 seconds or so) versions, or instrumental or live versions, of readily available songs. Of course a number of them are just album tracks. There are a small handful of songs that are otherwise unavailable. The packaging is somewhat flimsy and very unwieldy. The discs tend to run about 15-20 minutes each, so it's a pain to play them. It's truly insane to buy the whole thing.

I would have much preferred a 2 disc set featuring as many b-side tracks and unreleased tracks as possible, if there are that many to fill 2 full 80 minutes CD's. Don't really care to hear their extended mixes, most were for me just okay. Also would not care about all the demo and live stuff, unless the demos were really quite different. The b-sides from their early years would be good. This box set is so overpriced and you get very little for it with respect to never before released on CD material. Imagine if they had just re-issued all those original discs of their releases but chock full of bonus b-sides, it would have drawn lots of buyers and the price wouldn't be so daunting.

Why not a cure-like join the dots box, that would be great.

Yeah, each individual Themes pack is a custom multi-flip digi-pak. Digi-paks suck ass.

Don't know about you, but with boxsets, I usually FLAC them and also make use of CD-Rs so that I can put the sets away like fine china. I even made a nice slipcase for the 3xCD-Rs that I burned the Duran Singles 81-85 boxset [:)].

of all the cds i've had over the years, the only ones i ever had cd rot with were the simple minds themes box sets. a friend knew of a business in arizona that fixed cds with such problems. it worked and was pricey (about $100 US for all 4 box sets), but it made me so paranoid about even breathing on the discs after that (i'm told they essentially buff off the rot so you some of the protective layer on the disc), that i quickly just burned cd-r's of them all and put them all on my external hard drive, then archived them and eventually ebayed the boxes as i figure one of these days simple minds will do a proper remastered collection of ALL their non-album material.

Interesting, seeing as the rot occurs inside the disc. Do they laser the rot until it disintegrates?

i have no idea and don't remember (this was probably 6-7 years ago when i did it). but i didn't look at the discs (i never do - i suck, i know) until i repeatedly tried loading one of them into my computer to make a best of the themes cd and my computer kept getting "stuck" on one of the tracks. finally i popped the disc out, flipped it over and it looked not unlike a weather forecast of partial to cloudy skies, i kid you not. i was pissed at the time as simple minds are one of my big favorites and owning those boxes at the time was a real caveat to me. now i just wish all my favorite stuff that hasn't been remastered yet would be. most finally have, but certainly not all. my personal pet peeve besides the missing tracks syndrome on reissues is when the labels reissue the "classic" album by a band but not the whole catalog (gang of four' entertainment and springsteen's born to run being my biggest case in points. yes, i know the boss isn't cool or new wave but i'm old enough to say that i grew up with classic rock when it was still new - before new wave & punk existed - and i love it still about as much as all the great bands that came after). i've probably babbled enough for now...

cheers,

clarence

Clarence, that's exactly what happened to several of my "Themes" cd's...cloudy skies is a good description. I was able to sell them to a guy on ebay (with full disclosure of their condition) after I found clean replacements. Regarding the new set, has anyone confirmed with certainty that it is not remastered?

BTW, I second your thoughts on partially remastered catalogs...Springsteen is a great example.

I have Themes 1 and 2. 1 has some light variable clouds outside of where the tracks are and 2 is clear and sunny.

From all the info recieved direct from the label in the UK, there has been NO mention of the first four sets being remastered. They only state that they are being made available again in this box.
