Ting Tings, Duke Spirit & Airborne Toxic Event

Postby Frau_Blucher » Tue Dec 09, 2008 2:23 pm

At the Blender Theater at the Gramercy tonight...

FUCK!

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck! Schwenko and I completely missed the Airborne Toxic Event! Oh the humanity. [V]

Okay...so it was to entertain our companion, a 20-something belly-dancing forensic scientist over dinner and cocktails in a posh Meatpacking District restaurant in NYC (a story for another time!). Still, I thought our night was ruined!

But no...The Duke Spirit just blew my fucking mind. Lead singer Leila Moss had INCREDIBLE stage presence and energy. I highly recommend anyone interested in a fusion of Janis Joplin energy with Blondie glam to go see them. Really incredible set. A must see. I honestly was thinking, "holy crap, this is gonna be like Joy Division opening for the Buzzcocks...no way the Ting Tings can follow up that energy."

Sure as shit though, they did! Very different kinda band of course, but the Ting Tings put on a show themselves. We had a fat Jack Black-looking dude in front of us just going OFF on the dance floor. Far from being obnoxious, I thought it added greatly to the event...wait, was Quite Life in NYC tonight??

Anyway, neither the Ting Tings or the Duke Spirit are to be missed in my opinion. Do whatever you can to catch them. Possibly my gig of the year...even with completely missing the Airborne Toxic Event. Another time I suppose.

The Duke who??
The Ting Tings blew them out of the water..

Although the Duke Spirit LOOK like Blondie, they really don't sound like them.

The Ting Tings on the other hand were almost like Blondie with synths.
I had been totally underwhelmed with that "ipod" song, but the TTs came out with 5 straight songs that were incredible!
I am definitely a convert. My next keystroke will be on the "Shop Here" icon above to purchase their cd.

I'm bummed you guys didn't get to see the Airborne Toxic Event. I was hoping for some company in my geekiness for this band.

But I'm glad you dug the hotness that is Leila Moss. I saw them last play last year and got a photo with them after their set. She is hot and has great stage presence. The music is pretty good, but she really makes the band.

I'll have to go check out Ting Tings. I have no idea which iPod song is theirs, but I'll go give em a listen.

If anyone is in the SF Bay Area, The Airborne Toxic Event are headlining a gig in San Jose on Dec 17th.

If we'd gotten Toxic Event too, I suppose it would have been an embarassment of riches. Something left to keep my eyes out for, which shouldn't be too hard for an NYC band.

Hmmm...methinks Schwenko might eye up the TT's NYE event. I think it's a bit of a reach to say they blew Duke out of the water. Again, very different music. Moss is a great performer - a kick-ass set, especially if you enjoy and are familiar with the songs.TTs might certainly be more readily palatable if you're not familiar with either.

But no complaints at all!

I saw that, with Death Cab and Cold War Kids. That would be an excellent show.
Tucson is a two hour drive. I'm probably heading up North (the opposite direction from the Hell hole that is Tucson) for the weekend. They are coming in March to Scottsdale within minutes so I'll wait. Thanks though!

I wish I was able to go. [:(]

Couple of clips from last night's gig, minus the great thumping sound at the Blender Theater of course...
