Ladyhawke at Studio B in Brooklyn

I stayed up til nearly 5 in the morning as a direct result of this. Stage time for Ladyhawke was 1AM! That's One O'Fucking Clock. One Fucking O'Clock! On a dreary rainy weeknight. Really really punitive! All the more surprising then that the audience and Pip Brown herself were so into this gig. I had a great freaking time. I literally waffled about 50 times before going and still am not sure what compelled me. Very glad I did though. These guys aren't so strictly new wave as much as they're a mish-mash of lots of late 70s and early 80s stuff - everything from ELO to disco with guitars and lots of new wave as well of course.

The first new wave cue of the night was that the chandeliers in the lobby against the flat black walls immediately reminded me of Mad About Town. There's no telling what and how and why shit gets triggered in your brain:

Pip herself though has little new wave persona, dressing basically like a rock chick. She switched plenty from guitar to synths, looking pretty confident with both. She's pretty damned adorable whatever the case:

The band as a whole had a very The Jesus and Mary Chain feel. Maybe it was just the skinny kids and floppy hair:

I didn't see much hint of Pip's Asperger's Syndrome. As opposed to the Bowery review that had her eyes closed most of the time, she was really engaging here, smiling and laughing with a lot of eye contact. She did make a lot of weird faces, but this had the effect of seeming to make her kinda goofy and lovable as well as just very sincere and completely into her music:

I think her sincerity and fun-loving vibe totally translated into the audience. I honestly have never seen a crowd so engaged. Just about everyone from the front to the back of the room was dancing and hopping, which was amazing given the time of night. Pip herself made several comments that she couldn't believe what a fun-loving crowd it was, saying that it was easily the best night of the tour. I imagine they say that about a lot of gigs, but she seemed genuinely sincere, and so did the audience:

I'm sure her music had a lot to do with the engagement. It was just damned fun. Stuff like "Dusk Til Dawn" almost had an Alicia Bridges-I Love The Nightlife feel to it. It didn't sound like that, but it had the all-night wanna party energy. "Professional Suicide" has an unmistakable Gary Numan vibe. The track that Craig posted, "Magic", sounds very Berlin to me. "Crazy World" is bang-on Kim Wilde. Highlights for me were 'Paris Is Burning" and "My Delirium", two absolute new wave party songs. Very glad I went, though the drive back home in the wee hours was rough - nothing that two Red Bulls, an extra large coke and 6 White Castle sliders couldn't overcome. I'd never seen the usually-gridlocked Triboro Bridge completely empty - bizarre. From Dusk Til Dawn indeed:

I am simultaneously envious and glad you had such a great time! Sounds like one of those special nights when everything "clicked" for the band and audience.

Man, I need to get out more and find some sonic nirvana!
