Colin Hay

I'm seeing Colin Hay on Saturday night -- he's playing a tiny venue about 5 minutes from where I live, so I couldn't pass it up. I'll post info this weekend.

I almost went last year, same deal, real small place (a restaurant I think) but it was 30-40 minutes away, then I saw the price and it was $43 or something crazy like that. I passed but would like to see him.

I saw Colin Hay play an acoustic set last night at a local church venue. The concert was sold out (about 350 people). After an eclectic opening performer, Colin came out and entertained the crowd with amusing anecdotes and stories about his brief stint as an 80's superstar. He played about 10 songs, including 'Land Down Under', 'Who Can It Be Now?' and 'Overkill', as well as selections from his body of solo material. Colin's set lasted about 90 minutes, but easily 30 minutes of that time was consumed by Colin's witty stage banter as he re-tuned his guitar between songs.

With regard to his singing/playing, I have to point out what a phenomenal voice he has. I heard that he toured with Ring Starr's band a few times, and after hearing his voice live, one can easily make the case for his talent.

The only weak areas came when Colin's wife joined him on backing vocals. Her voice was fine, but it was often accompanied by mime-like dances, as if she were providing a sign-language version of the lyrics for the deaf. I found it a bit ridiculous and distracting, but the audience seemed to enjoy it.

Overall, I enjoyed the concert. I went with my spouse and 6 friends-- none of whom were especially familiar with Colin Hay-- and they all had a good time. Given that the show was inexpensive and only about 5 minutes from where I live, there isn't much room for complaint. And while I'm not a huge fan of Men at Work or Colin's solo material, it was definitely worth it.

Thanks for the review. I always thought he had a distinctive voice, and I still have a soft spot for the old Men At Work stuff.
