Thunder Up, their final album, is still in print but in its orignal CD release - it has never been remastered and expanded.

Why their back catalogue was allowed to go out of print is a mystery.

here's why:
who's the sound?

The Sound were one of the most criminally overlooked bands of the Post-Punk/New Wave era and featured the genius songwriting of Adrian Borland. Rising out of the ashes of the UK's first punk group, the Outsiders, the band existed between 1979-1987 and produced some of the most exilerating, original and intelligent music of the era.

Very much in the same vein as Comsat Angels, the Chameleons (whom they were close friends with), Sad Lovers & Giants (more criminally underrated bands) as well as Echo & the Bunnymen & U2 (who got the fame), the band weren't helped by their perceived lack of commercial image despite sharing record labels w/Echo.

They had zero exposure in the US, were vitrually ignored in their UK home, but were very popular in mainland Europe (particularly the Netherlands), much like the bands mentioned above.

Their closest song to a hit was Sense Of Purpose (What Are We Going To Do?) from the classic From the Lions Mouth lp.

The band's influence can be found in the next wave of post-punk bands such as Bloc Party, Interpol, Futureheads, etc

Hope this helps...

How could I forget the Exotic Birds catalog, especially considering Trent Reznor's involvement with the L'oiseau EP!

I never heard anything about the Sound growing up in the 80's but I read an article about The Sound a few years back in Uncut and I started with "The Lion's Mouth" and have since picked everything I can get my hands on with this band. Amazing band and better than half of the stuff I used to listen to back then. Check 'em out sometime, they are a kindred spirit to the Chameleons. Both are criminally overlooked and both are damn good bands.

Yeah, I picked up "Lion's Mouth" when it was reissued as well. Now I'm wishing I had grabbed some of the others when they were in print. It's strange that such a good band went so unnoticed (at least in the US) at the time.

<br>Maybe this isn't issue for this topic, but I would like to hear Your opinions about 180g vinyl reissues. Yesterday I saw in nearby store JAM's "In the city" first LP on "highest quality" 180g vinyl. And there's more to come, P.I.L. "First Edition", "Second Edition" or Metal Box etc...It's emotionally tempting and brings back good old memories, but...

Do You feel that this is another musical industry's scam or welcome return to basics?

As many, I've had a huge collection of vinyls, but in the early 80' I sold them almost all and replace with "little, practic, indestructible, enduring piece of plastic", except some rarities (lucky me). Short time after, first expanded and remastered reissues appeared with welcome bonuses (EPs, singles), and of course I bought them and replace "old" CD's. In some cases, We have almost "third generation" of remasters, but now is obvious that some of albums We'll never see on CD's, not to mention on "new vinyl".

Or to paraphrase John Lydon..."Ever Feel Like You've Been Cheated?"

Hello my friend. Excellent post dude. I, too, like many, practically gave away tons of records in the '80s to move on to:cassettes(and later cd's). I've been recollecting(so to speak) vinyl records again for the last 3 years, and I love it. To me, it's much cheaper to pick up some cool 12" singles of a band I dig, or a full length LP of a band, then to try to find their cd's, and when you do, they're usually $8-$10 bucks. I collect 12" maxi singles on vinyl if at all possible, as I like to hear the different mixes, and so forth. Plus, the picture covers are cool to look at.

I like the fact that the labels are FINALLY(and I use this term loosely) trying to "get it right", as to what to release and so forth. The remastered/reissued vinyl is a welcome addition IMHO, as they usually include some bonus tracks, or something new that the old one might not have had(a pic(s), or something else). I try to pick up all I can that I like on vinyl, as it's a cool way to enjoy music.

Plus, as many have mentioned here, some of the records, even now, sound MUCH better than the "remasters" or the originals on cd, which is a good thing. Some analog, is great. It can only help the hobby/afficionado

"Keepin the '80s alive!"

Just brief information for the guys who recently discovered The Sound, or were unable to buy CDs on time, one of My all time favourites...RENASCENT Licence for "Jeopardy" and "...Lions mouth" expired two years ago but, as they noticed on their web site, Warner Bros / Korova are planning to reissue those two albums. Of course, this information has been published two years ago, also...So, knowing WB and other corporations, and the Korova's unknown fate, maybe You'll wait a little bit longer for those two albums. Or, You can purchase/bid for them for hefty prices on eBay or GEMM (prices are outrageous). I hope that I'm wrong, but...the name of the topic is, "let's share some reissue daydreams..."

Also, I would like to Thank DJ Phoenix for the reply regarding "180g" matter and inform him that today I commit the crime against My family budget and bought new vinyls: Joy Division: "Closer", Velvet Undergroung: "...Nico..." and Certain Ratio: "Sextet"..."Safe picks", but I almost cried having them again on vinyl..not to mention the happiness reading lyrics without glasses...at last I'm 49...

And one more comment...I'm very surprised seeing Bee Gees, Samantha Fox, Herb Alpert and David Cassidy on "new wave and related genres wish lists". Don't get me wrong, David Cassidy was cure for the heartbreak when I was 11, but it was back in 1972.

Christ - That's sad.

On a similar note, The first 2 chameleons albums
are out of print(single disc versions i mean).
THAT is pathetic. Oh well, at least poor versions
of them like Interpol will numb the kid's minds.

Yes, that is sad. Fortunately, Script of the Bridge has been reissued/remastered as a deluxe 25th anniversary 2-cd edition and is a must buy. While many bands needed an album or two to hit their stride, the Chameleons hit paydirt straight out of the box. Their first three albums are 5-star classics.

RE: What Does Anything Mean...the 2nd album, I understand this will be getting the same royal treatment as Script of the Bridge in due time. Mark Burgess and the band are very close to their fanbase and have done all the right things in satiating their rabid fanbase.

We are even getting a 2-cd, remaster of the entire recorded output of The Reegs w/unreleased material in a few months time (Dave Fielding/Reg Smithies band - one half of the Chameleons)

In regards to the Sound's first two cd's, I emailed Renascent a few months ago and they are working on this, so this probably doesn't clarify anything.

Yeah, i got the Script reissue, but would have loved some 12" singles and b-sides as well. WDAMB should have some great stuff
too, hopefully. As for the Reegs, i have the 2 albums, but i can't
wait for this! You on Wishville at all?

PS - Much agreed about Mark; i've had sporadic contact with him since '92 or so. He sent me a 'Tony Fletcher' cd. Nicest guy in the
world.

What is Wishville? Can you send me a link.

I am on the Blue Apple Music notification list for the Reegs pre-order.

WDAMB is one of my all-time favourites (I like it just slightly more than Script of the Bridge)

Cheers!

forums.thechameleons.com is the address. Sadly, it has gone WAY down hill in the 10 years it's been around. It was on the board that Mark and Dave had their "differences" out when the Athens incident went down. Very sad. There are some serious "Mark haters" on there, and then some who kiss Dave's ass. He has personal friends on there, which might account for it! So beware!

Jeez I could go on all day on this one. Several repeats in the bunch ...

- NEVER BEEN ON CD (to my knowledge)
Peter Schilling - Things To Come (allegedly this year?)
Burning Sensations - S/T (the full album, not the four-track EP)
Billy Satellite - S/T (yeah, not really new wave, but still)
Monte Video and the Cassettes - S/T EP
Vitamin Z - Rites Of Passage (though I guess this is now happening - nice!)
Minor Detail - S/T

- REMASTER/REISSUE BADLY NEEDED
Red Box - Motive (might be happening soon, the reissue of "The Circle & The Square was a big success, plus their long-awaited third album is coming out soon!)
a-ha - Hunting High And Low (dreadful sound quality)
Q-Feel - S/T (one of the LP's I've hung on to because it sounds so much better than the CD)
Spandau Ballet - everything prior to True (more poor sound quality)
Alphaville - first two albums
Baltimora - Living In The Background
Re-Flex - The Politics Of Dancing
The Icicle Works - S/T
Real Life - Heartland

The Icicle Works first album was remastered in 2006 as a double and a limited 3 cd set you can find more info here http://www.discogs.com/Icicle-Works-The ... ster/99121 Could certainly be doing with the rest of their albums receiving the same treatment though.
