They sounded absolutely fantastic, which was a surprise to me, as I had scoured Youtube for recent live clips, some of which indeed showed a very off-key Richard Butler. Not so in SLC. I'll let Tbone weigh in but as for me I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Both Butlers were in top form - Richard looked happy, healthy, energetic and was on-key all night. Tbone has the setlist, which did not include "Heartbreak Beat", to my disappointment. The Mondays were fantastic as well - very energetic and tight. Here's a clip of "The Ghost in You". Sorry for the poor audio and running out of fucking memory.

Sounds as if you and I are alot alike as far as PF tracks? "Heartbreak Beat" is my all time favorite Furs jam. Thanks for the heads up.

just wanted to report on the show last saturday
the Furs put on a great and energetic show
they basically stuck to material from their first 4 records
the band was tight and Richard sounded awesome thanks to the audible sound system
great show
as for the Happy Mondays, the less said the better
the only song to get any crowd response was Step On which they ended their set with
Shaun Ryder just stood there with his hand in his pocket the whole set while the back up singer was trying to get the crowd going
I personally think that the MOnday's music is out of date due to the fact it was designed for the rave culture of the late 80s and early 90s like Grunge it quickly faded out
I also read that the Furs opened for the Killers last week and that Richard did a duet with them with Pretty in Pink
like to see or hear that duet

Lemme just say: THIS SHOW WAS A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. The Furs were VERY VERY good, Richard Butler was amazing, sounded amazing, and was so into the show. He jumped, kicked, spun around several times, and so forth, throughout. Just a heckuva show IMO. The Happy Mondays were sorat Blah, as the lead singer just stood there through the whole set. Plus, they were boring.
I was extremely impressed with the Furs performance(though no "Heartbreak Beat"-despite me asking about 10 times). I even asked(again) to play "The Ghost In You" after the following song(even though they had just played it-I wanted to hear it again[:D]).
Like I said, amazing performance by the Butler boys and the rest of the Furs. if you have the chance to go see them, do so. Plus, the show cost me $12 bucks to see(I won $35 playing blackjack), so I used part of my winnings to buy a ticket.[:D]

I have to admit I was a bit surprised by the Happy Mondays fans who thought they should be headlining. The Furs are legendary. I've always thought of Happy Mondays as a 2nd or 3rd tier band that are in nowhere near the same league as the Furs. Then again I only know the singles like "Step On" and "Kinky Afro" which I considered pretty weak. Maybe they have album tracks that blow those away? I certainly hope so.

I can see the Furs putting on a better show than the Mondays, who most could have guessed would be worse for their drug-addled wear. But Furs "legendary"? Come on. They had a sprinkling of mainstream MTV-type hits only when they turned to Rundgren to produce a stereotypic new wave sound. The Mondays helped define Madchester. I'd argue they're far more legendary, and if you brought up this argument in the UK, you'd probably get a pint smashed on your head and called a cunt.

Well it's possible I may have written off the Madchester scene while waiting those 5 years for the 2nd Stone Roses album (who for my money were the defining band of that scene until it all went wrong) or maybe I got more into Inspiral Carpets or something. I'll have to dig into the Happy Mondays catalog. As I say, I never cared for their singles all that much. Sounded like EMF to me.

Then just the differences in opinions here speak volumes to what a weird combo this was. Not sure what the promoters were thinking.
