U2's 360 in Chicago - 9-13-09

I had the opportunity to see U2 in Chicago at Soldier Field on 9-13-09. No doubt about it - they are the only band that surfaced during the 80's that can fill a stadium (or an arena) these days. Matter of fact, very few bands will fill a stadium any more.

My take on the show is that is was simply too big of a show. While I knew it would be a spectacle going in, the enormous show left me wishing to see them in a smaller venue - and I had fantastic seats pretty close. I don't feel the new CD stands up to other releases and that opinion was proved right when the songs were performed live.

Granted, U2 is still an amazing, important band. Yet, I just felt the 360 Tour was too over the top and impersonal - something they were able to avoid during the arena shows. I had the opportunity to see them in the 80's and on the two previous tours (Elevation and Vertigo) and this was by far the weakest of shows.

I had tix for Vancouver that I had to sell, so my make-up show will be in Seattle next June.

I really enjoy the new album ("Boots..." excepted), but it's interesting that you and many reviewers have noted that the new songs aren't really highlights of the show. I was actually really looking forward to seeing them performed live. In any case, I have to wait six months to form my opinion.
