Cleanup on Isle 7

i understand exactly what you mean, but it's inevitable no matter how hard you try to filter out crap you don't want, regardless of the medium due to the grey areas of personal opinion. i personally don't see how anyone, on this site, could ask about springsteen, huey lewis or rick astley, for instance, but they have. i've asked about fyc, the beat, chris isaak and catherine wheel, none of which i should have depending on whom you ask. no matter how upset you or others might get about it, somebody will always post about an act someone else feels isn't apropos for nwo. is it really worth taking the time to give them a bunch of shit over it? time you could better spend reading and learning about a band you like? just an opinion and just trying to help. as non-nwo artist elton john once titled an album, don't shoot me i'm only the piano player.

I have to say that if I saw posts concerning Rick Astley, Dead or Alive, A-ha and the like on my first time of coming here, the place would be considered another generic 80s forum which would be a shame as there have been posts on here that have allowed people access to music that deserved a wider audience.

When I first go into the early 80s I was listening to artists like Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Siouxie and the Banshees and the like but stopped. Why? Because it's the same old thing; they found a formula that works and will hammer it into the ground no matter what. To quote The Selector 'It's the same old show on my radio'.
is it really worth taking the time to give them a bunch of shit over it?
Yes it is. I'm not going to sit idle while a bunch of crap slips into the playlist so to speak. I'm not talking about the "gray area" crap. I'm talking Rick Astley, Sinitta and those type of acts.

what's grey to you or me may not be grey to someone else. just about any act could be considered a crossover into another by someone. so you like every song you hear on xm's 'first wave' channel for instance? i know i don't - plenty of it is grey area crap in my book, yet i just change the station when something i don't like. whatever. good luck with not sitting idly by. keep the fighting the power and rocking on with your bad self!
Yes, I hear songs that I don't like, but they fit the format outlined by the program director. Rest assured I don't have to worry about hearing Rick Astley, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany or Europe.

I hate to say it but this is a sign of things to come. If I could compare this board to several OTR and Classic Film boards I frequent, the distinctions between genres and classifications tend to break down with the passage of time (much to my irritation).

It would be interesting to to see what people's actual definitions of "New Wave" are. And why one synth driven band qualifies and another doesn't.

If people are going to explore differences of opinion, we need to define our terms.

I once heard a definition of New Wave as Punk mixed with Disco. At first, that bothered me. But the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. Now that's a pretty broad, vague description but it probably makes as much sense as any.

In the end, it's more about a feeling than a literal definition. What we experienced in the early 80s was a golden age of Rock music spurred by Punk, experimentation, the advent of synths and a huge population of Baby Boomers who were ready to make music unlike their elders. I don't believe there is an adequate umbrella definition that could encompass it all.

But I'd love people to try. Otherwise the point of what is and what isn't is moot.

After that, we can try to define what "Rock and Roll" and "Pop" is.

Oh and how the hell did Baltimora ever make the list?

PS Here's the MySpace page for Isle 7! (I kid you not): http://www.myspace.com/isle7

Probably within 20 years it'll just go under the umbrella of "80's" along with everything else that came out during that decade, leaving only hardcore fans and scholars to separate it all in books, essays blogs, sites like this, etc.

It's sort of how most people today just think of all music that came out during the 40's as "music from the 40's" and don't make distinctions between big band, folk, jazz, etc. when that probably drives the purists insane.

Don't mind me. I'm just getting a headstart on being a grumpy old man. [:D]
