Good Remasters

Good Remasters

Kind of off topic plus list the remastered editions which you find to be excellent and superior to the originals. For me:

1993 Restless records remasters of Yellow Magic Orchestra albums. Released at time when the loudness wars were unheard now. Now sadly out of print.

The 2003 Travelogue/Reproduction remasters of the first Human League albums were good in my opinion. Not perfect but decent enough to sound better than the originals.

The new Thomas Dolby remasters are said to be of high quality, though I havent bought them yet.

They are and you should get them. Thomas stated in one of his blogs that he was involved in the remastering process from the beginning. Let's see if he re-releases Aliens Ate My Buick next. It's my favourite TD album.

Siouxsie - The Scream (2 CD edition)
Siouxsie - Join Hands

The Depeche Mode back catalogue

All of the early Bunnymen releases, which I only recently purchased.

The first two Thomas Dolby remasters

The Human League early remasters

While the OMD remasters are a little compressed, they are not bad at all. Those are just off the top of my head.

King's Bittersweet was fab. DOA was ok (loved the album though). I want King's Steps In Time to be remastered next.

Off the top of my head, the U2 catalog that's been reissued so far, along with The Church's, Simple Minds', Echo & The Bunnymen's, Killing Joke's and Love & Rockets'.

We can add any remasters that Rubellan has done to this list. Which reminds me to ask, is there a master list of projects you've worked on, Rubellan? I was listening the The Mood cd today and was reminded of your excellent work.

I have it as well. All those obscure 80s artists need a second listen. I loved the Bruce Wooley & The Camera Club re-issue as well as Fashion's Twilight Of Idols and White Door's Windows.
Here's some more that may deserve a reissue:

1. Scarlet Fantastic "24hrs"
2. Fiction Factory "Another Story"
3. Strange Cruise "Strange Cruise"
4. Belouis Some "Belouis Some"
5. Kissing The Pink "Certain Things Are Likely"

The Simple Minds remasters were really good

The Church remasters were all very loud and compressed

The Killing Joke remasters were very dull sounding, compared to the original CD's, which were brighter and clearer

The corrected New Order remasters sound great

The Cure - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
The Cure - The Head on the Door

Some of the earlier Cure CD remasters sound good, though there's a little compression.

Oh, both of the recent Pylon reissues, Gyrate and Chomp, were stunning!

The full list of my projects (by request) that I've remastered are as follows:

ARTERY - INTO THE GARDEN; AN ARTERY COLLECTION
TOYAH - MAYHEM (SECOND AND SUBSEQUENT PRESSINGS)
TOYAH - TOYAH! TOYAH! TOYAH! (1980 LIVE ALBUM)
HAYSI FANTAYZEE - BATTLE HYMNS (BEST OF)
MOBILES - DROWNING IN BERLIN (BEST OF)
KING - BITTER SWEET
DEAD OR ALIVE - SOPHISTICATED BOOM BOOM
EYELESS IN GAZA - PHOTOGRAPHS AS MEMORIES (2008 REMASTER)
EYELESS IN GAZA - CAUGHT IN FLUX (2008 REMASTER)
EYELESS IN GAZA - DRUMMING THE BEATING HEART/PALE HANDS (2008 REMASTER)
EYELESS IN GAZA - BACK FROM THE RAINS (2008 REMASTER)
MARTYN BATES - LETTERS WRITTEN/THE RETURN OF THE QUIET (REMASTERED THE 'QUIET' ALBUM)
NENA - IT'S ALL IN THE GAME
HAZEL O'CONNOR - SMILE
BALAAM AND THE ANGEL - THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD
BALAAM AND THE ANGEL - LIVE FREE OR DIE (Ugh, what an awful album!)
THE MOOD - THE SINGLES COLLECTION
TOYAH - GOOD MORNING UNIVERSE (2 CD BEST OF)
TOYAH - DREAMCHILD-DELUXE EDITION (This title is soon to be released)

The New Order remasters were a total fuck up and as for buying the corrected ones you have no way of knowing which is which. I know Ideal Copy were saying they had they had the fixed versions but it would cost an absolute fortune to buy them from the UK. The Killing Joke ones i found to be ok but i don't believe Brighter Than A Thousand Suns was remastered at all i think they just used the original mix and that they should have made that a double with one remastered disc Very good remasters i feel were the Tears For Fears ones in the 90's and the two Thomas Dolby ones sound very good as well. I have bought all the U2 ones so far and The Joshua Tree sounds rubbish although that was worth it just for the DVD itself. The first 3 didn't sound too good either yet the remaster of The Unforgettable Fire is brilliant. The Simple Minds ones deserve a mention as well.

The only New Order remaster I have is Power,Corruption & Lies which I thought sounded ok. Maybe I should listen again. Unforgettable Fire was way better than all the other U2 ones. Since we're discussing this i thought I'd mention Kajagoogoo's cds from 2004 . The sound quality was at best average considering it was EMI (maybe that Andy Walters was involved) although there's no mention on the white Feathers cd about him. US label Caroline Records did a wonderful job in remastering The Human League albums Dare,Hysteria and Crash from 2005. Also the ABC remasters both from 1998 and 2005 were quite good.

The Heaven 17 ones were good as well and i agree about the ABC remasters though it's still annoying the way the The Look Of Love Part Four fades out but i think that's the case in every release of Lexicon. I have Dare/Love And Dancing in a digipack it was released by Virgin and it sounds good as well. Crash And Hysteria i had to buy from America as they were not released anywhere else and even though they don't state anywhere that they had been remastered they do sound very good.

Well both Hysteria and Crash had a label sticker saying that they were expanded re-issues. Anyway Caroline does a top notch job with all their cds.

Hey Rubellan, I am one of those who's constantly trying to upgrade and the quality of his albums and expands his collection so I buy almost any remasters issued. I have bought almost all your remasters except Toyah CDs, and you did an awesome job. There was only one that I was not happy with and that was Mobiles, the Best of CD. I found the sound a bit distort, especially on Amor Amor and Drowning in Berlin. I don't remember when or where I purchsed it but I had a CD of most of their materials and it sounds way better to me. I was wondering if you had any similiar feedback on this one CD from others as well? Now in my opinion your work on The Mood was the best of all. Flawless.
