What Do you Do For Exercise?

Postby zill » Sun Jul 25, 2010 1:59 am

Just wondering what activities people find really help their fitness levels, and if anyone has any comments on any of the "fad" type exercie prgrams / gadgets (the Brazilian Butt Lift comes to mind).

I'm finding that the things I did in my 30's don't necessarily work in my 40's.

I mainly run, but I have to say that Tony Horton's P90X is fantastic. It's packaged up into fancy dvds and workout programs, but at the core it is just good old fashioned hard work, lifting weights, push ups, pull ups and cardio. If you stick with it every day, you WILL get results. Highly recommended if you're serious about getting in shape.

The other day I did the "Grouse Grind" - a hike up the side of Grouse Mountain. Some people call it "mother nature's stair master", because even though it is only 3 km, you gain over 850 metres (2,500 feet) of elevation. It was my first time in 10 years...and I was 15 minutes slower than my best time.

The hardest thing is finding the time. That's why I wonder if anyone has tried any of the programs / gadgets that claim to give results in a short workout.

I've been an avid swimmer since high school (swam for a national club team and university). I still swim between 10 and 15 miles per week with a masters team and compete a few times a year (I'm swimming a relay across the Long Island sound in a couple weeks).

<p align="justify">If I was datin' or already with someone, I'd exercise (reluctantly) 'cause I have to stay in shape for her. Since I'm not, I'm on a steady diet of beer, pizza, Cheetos, ice cream, and lots of television[}:)]

I've been a runner since Feb 1985, 6 marathons and numerous 10K, etc... now I run about every other day, any where from 6.5-8.4 miles depending on the route and the energy I have that day.

I've definitely slowed the per mile pace in the past few years, I was able to run 7-7:30/mile pretty regularly while in my 20s and 30's, but now at 47, I'm happy with 8-8:30 pace/mile and run for fitness.

Gone are my days of Kickboxing, Kali, Grappling and Wing Chun (was great when I was younger and had more time on my hands).

Now:
Cardio routine 1 night a week (Personal Training)
Core-Strength and Kickboxercise routine 1 night a week (with my PT)

Helps keep the beer gut from popping-out, which means I can feed it more often without getting fat :-)

I have bene looking into Krav Maga as there is a club near work.. but again it's just the time aspect given my existing PT routine. I did think about moving away from the PT to Krav Maga.. but PT is close to home.. KM is close to work. I prefer to be close to home!

.. of course there is always shagging the wife added into the mix [:D]

I hike, bike, walk all the time, with a sporadic run (about 3-5 miles-ish) now and then. I weigh the same as I did in high school. It's a lifetime of habits such as taking stairs instead of elevators, parking at the far end of the parking lot, just getting out and doing stuff.

good intentions with little execution seems to be my method. i think the main obstruction i face is my revulsion at getting sweaty.
