Overall, I think that the previous volumes are worth the purchase, namely for the rare 12" mixes and generally good sound quality. These releases claim that the original master tapes have been used. However, those of you concerned about loudness wars and brickwalling may wish to avoid these collections. Some of the remasters on these releases sound harsh ... not nearly as bad as the 2010 Duran Duran remasters, but it's pushing it! "Smalltown Boy" on Volume 2 suffers from audio distortion when the drum machine beat kicks in. Likewise, "Take On Me" is just too loud. Some tracks sound quite good otherwise, such as "In Private" from Volume 1.

Well, I think there are quite some songs that people might be looking for to finally have them on CD like the fantastic "Military Drums" by Hubert KaH. I only wish they would have any of the promo mixes that had been made for the US. The same goes for other favorites of mine; e. g. "Hide and seek", "Don't you..." and "Trouble (US Mix)" only to name a few.

So to me this is definitively a CD set I am going to buy.

Yeah, I would have loved to see Hubert KaH's "Limousine" (American Re-Mix) or the "Something I Should Know" (Extended Remix) that have never been on cd but I'm happy someone picks Hubert KaH to be on a compilation. For OMD "Tesla Girls" (Specially Remixed Version) would have been cool but "So In Love" is cool too. Hopefully, it's the 4:58 version of Billy Idol's "Eyes Without A Face" and the extended version of "Love Like Blood" from Killing Joke. These are nice to get though:

Send Me An Angel (Extended Version) - Real Life
Eyes Without A Face (Full Length Version) - Billy Idol
Slave To Love (Special 12" Mix) - Bryan Ferry
Let's Go To Bed (Extended Version) - The Cure
China Girl (Long Version) - David Bowie
So In Love (Extended Version) - Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dar
Life In A Northern Town (Extended Version) - Dream Academy

Already looking forward to Vol. 4.

I'm sure the vast majority of this stuff has appeared on CD before and excuse my ignorance but who or what is Hubert KaH or Jeanne Mas ? I just wish they would be more creative with these releases and dig up mixes that have only appeared on vinyl up till now. As for China Girl (Long Version) - David Bowie just buy the Let's Dance album and you will get that.

moni,

definitely check out the song "So Many People" by Hubert Kah--probably on youtube. It's the only song by them that ever got any airplay in NY on WLIR in the late 80s, but it's a super powerful and beautiful club track if you're into emotional synthdance. As for who 'hubert kah' is, it's essentially Michael Cretu, the man who went on to create Enigma in the 90s. He also produced all the albums for euro singer Sandra in the 80s (i think they were married).

@Moni:

as for Hubert KaH you have to keep in mind that So80s is a German release and Hubert KaH was a German group (these days Hubert Kemmler continues as a solo act). And as budaniel already mentions Hubert KaH as a band are essential collaborators of Michael Cretu and his 80s stuff. As far as I know Hubert KaH had at least three top ten hits on the Billboard Club Play Charts. However, this didn't translate into real sales for the Hot 100 but quite a number of 80s fans all around the world know his music or songs he wrote for other artists. In Japan for example his song "Angel 07" was chosen to promote the introduction of Sony's Walkman. Since I already own the CD single for "Military Drums" I would have preferred a rare mix to be on this 80s compilation or another rare mix of one of his songs, but hey, it's better than nothing at all.

yeah, I thought that it might be a German or Euro release, considering also inclusion of Jeanne Mas.... whom I love by the way, and pleasantly surprised to see her as opposed to the more commercially successful Desireless [:D]

What type of re-mastering is expected on volume 3?

Slave To Love (Special 12" Mix) - Bryan Ferry
+
Hide and Seek (Long Version) - Howard Jones
would both interst me.

Is one cd done as a mix?

Are these cds expensive?

I might just wait untill Retro Active 7.

[/quote] I think all the volumes are remastered in 32 bit. I guess disc 1 will be a mix.
