Whither the bootlegger?

With the widespread popularity of swapping mp3's amongst friends, making it possible to get anything that's ever been bootlegged or would have been bootlegged in the future for free, just who do bootleggers target nowadays? The dwindling number of middle aged technophobes who don't know how to play mp3's? The traditionalists who have to have a physical copy of something just for old time's sake?

Up until the mid 90's I could count on the weekend record shows at various hotels and VFW halls all over New Jersey to get bootleg CD's of concerts, session outtakes and the like, but now it's all up on YouTube and the weekend record shows vanished.

Prior to the mp3 boom, the most competition a bootlegger had was other bootleggers, but now it's anyone and everyone. Are there bootleggers anymore?

Some of those Duran Duran Fan Club releases I would pay for, atlhough not big money, mind you ... more like regular retail prices. The ones I've heard (eg. Master Mixes), the quality is excellent, like they were mastered from studio tapes.

I don't want just an mp3, I want the physical copy so that if anything happens to the mp3, I still have a cd.

Bootleggers are a desperate and spineless lot. They've resorted to selling their malwares behind layers of eBay screen names and Paypal accounts, swindling people out of their money by riding on the coat tails of the artists who actually earn their keep. The moment you raise the slightest concern over the legitimacy of their counterfeit goods, your money's back in your account. I'm happy to see that a lot of these low lives are being held accountable in Federal Court:

I'm sooooo happy for YouTube and I'm sure the artists are also. If they can't make money off of these performances, why should bootleggers?

I have been working on a method to transfer all of your mp3's to some other format to save them. I'm not quite there yet but I am getting close!

It's interesting that they would gravitate to Ebay and interesting that there would even be consumers who want their product in this day and age. I guess they're still out there but since everything is free on the internet, it seems like a waste of time now.

Even with the sarcasm, I still don't download just the mp3's, I want a physical cd with info and artwork
