i don't really get this whole 'testing the waters' with a greatest hits to see if it's worth reissuing the two SAW produced albums. At this point in time, the only people buying CDs are dedicated collectors--which means, most will probably already have every song on this collection in some form. The addition of the bonus mixes is great--but doesn't this mean that we'll just be getting them once again if the deluxe editions of the albums come out and are as thorough as they should be with bonus tracks? And seriously, after this greatest hits release, if all goes as planned with the bonus tracks, I believe the ONLY dead or alive 12" mix that will not yet have appeared on CD is In Too Deep. Every other remix has appeared on one compilation or another. If they had just managed to cram that 12" on here, I could have called it a day with my Dead or Alive collection. Oh wait--I also need to U.S. 12" mix of Baby Don't Say Goodbye on CD. But that would require a reissue of their fourth album with bonus tracks...

budaniel... you nailed it.

Testing the waters is BS. It's a cash grab. They know how desparate real fans are for the stuff that's hard to come by, so they give it to us crumb by crumb.

The 12" collection was probably cancelled because someone said "STOP!!!! If we release this, how are we going to milk the real fans out of every dime in their pockets in the future?"

It's a pathetic joke. When there are already a glut of hits comps, clearly they're going to make us buy the same tracks 3 and 4 times just to get the stuff we've been ever so patiently waiting for.

And labels actually have the balls to wonder why sales are down. The last few people out there willing to fork out the cash for actual discs are being penalized for their patience and gleefully taken advantage of by labels who even if they're smart enough to listen to what fans want, don't give it to them for fear of losing control of us.

I would have no issue with buying pricey discs of mixes I already have on mp3 just because I want excellent quality versions that will always be with me. Too bad the labels could care less.

Oh please. It's £3.99 - the price of a CD single. My friend has spent all year trying to get the 7" A-sides on CD for the first time ever and pushed to fill the disc to it's limited with other unreleased 12" mixes. This is far from a ca$h cow for anyone at this price. Greatest Hits are much more striaght forward than full album re-issues to get cleared - especially when some of the albums have no hit singles on them and didn't sell very well originally anyway! You couldn't buy 4 of these EIGHTEEN tracks for this price from iTunes so it's disappointing that people still complain!

I have to agree. I'm thrilled that this is being released at all and have no complaints regarding it whatsoever.

But the strange thing with "Dead or Alive" is that many people only remember them for "You Spin me Around".

It was only for the Retro Active series when I saw there was more to the band.

I think people appreciate good quality recordings at a good price.

I pre-ordered my copy.

[/quote] No complains from me. 3.99 is the price of a drink perhaps and this will be the first DOA collection to include all the official 7" mixes. I just get pissed when record companies fuck around with release dates and love to keep everyone in suspense. You should ask your friend to also push forward with a full 12" mixes collection. We must all remember that the 80s are back in with a force, and a lot of newer people will probably also like to sample some of the great stuff that they missed out on before they were even born !

sure, if this was ONE release it would be ridiculous to complain. But not only is it the umpteenth release of Dead or Alive with just a few new tracks, it's also a problem across the board--record companies and artists (both old and new). This is a vicious practice in an industry that should blame itself for the downfall of music sales, not the dedicated consumers who continuously get scammed into repackaged greatest hits CDs with a new track or two, special editions and deluxe editions released within a year of the original release with all new material on it--a practice that continues in the midst of a world wide economic disaster.

And seriously--if a full deluxe edition of Dead or Alive's FIRST, album (originally ignored by the mainstream) was possible, I don't see what the problem would be with deluxe editions of their two most popular albums, both of which spawned top 20 hits in the U.S. alone and both of which were produced by one of the most successful production teams of the 80s. There are loads of Stock Aitken Waterman albums being reissued with extensive and virtually complete bonus tracks these days, I'm sure because the record companies realize there's a pretty slim chance people will double dip for artists like Sonia, Mandy Smith, Princess... There's clearly still a huge market for Dead or Alive (thanks to Pete Burns recent resurgence on reality TV), therefore the record companies are still rehashing his stuff.

And of course, I'm thrilled that this new CD is going to have some rarities on it that I've been dying to have on CD, but think about this. IF this leads to the first two albums being reissued in deluxe editions with all the remixes, guess what that's going to mean for those of us who bought this CD? We're going to buy the reissues and find that we now have everything no this greatest hits CD, which means it hits the used online CD market in high quantities, at which point, no one is seeing any royalties for it...

Okay, you've got a point. It's surprisingly (almost shockingly) cheap, but I'm confused...at such a low price point, what purpose is this release intended to serve? It ISN'T going to make the label much money, and it seems a bit unlikely to be a collection for the few people who are fans of DOA and have yet to buy any of their hits. If it's a release truly aimed at serious fans (thus the inclusion of the few mixes), then who is responsible for releasing the much-begged-for 12" compilation?

How does sales of another (very low priced) greatest hits disc accurately tell anyone what the demand for the remix collection is, especially when there have been petitions and forums begging for this stuff for years? I'm sure your friend is doing all he can and I'm certainly not blaming him, but it's frustrating to be forced to wait for something that should have been released and was withdrawn without explanation.

Also it just occured to me, Pete once stated that his recent fiascos with plastic surgery cost him a fortune and some of his back catalogue. So here's a chance to repay him for that great music and buy the cds when they come out ! Am I right ?

for some reason, amazon.com had this title listed under "That's the Way I Like It" originally, but now, it's coming up under the title of "alive"!!! The title hasn't changed anywhere else that I can see...

Well, for anyone worried about duplication on future releases, there are still many remixes, b-sides, live tracks and unreleased songs - enough to stuff 2CDs per album and more. Trying to be positive. I don't know how this works truth be told - the CD is £5.99 on some sites so it's a R.R.P. thing - stockists can sell CDs for whatever price they like. It might go up to £7.99 after the inital release... not sure. The material is wholey owned by Sony. Pete Burns sold the entire catalogue to them to pay for his, erm, face.
