There is no right answer, but I'll make a personal argument for 1982
Why?

I can't find or exactly remember what I submitted to the NWO thread concerning the top New Wave songs of all time, but:

I know that my #1 song was "LWTUA", which was released in 1980, and then the remaining top 10 (and probably top 5) included

"Blue Monday" (recorded 1982)

"Don't you want Me" (recorded 1981, released Dec 1981 in the UK) but released in the USA 1982

"Temptation" 1982

1984 for me. (although 1983 is right there alongside it, really)

This is when I was most deeply into the music, the bands, & the scene. KYYX went off the air in April '84. Stephen Rabow went over to KHIT and continued his amazing playlists, featuring hard-to-find imports. That was the year (and '85, too) I probably scoured the record shops the most, searching for the most obscure stuff I could find. Great memories, new wave friends, fashion, rat tails, when it was all still fresh and new. (altho to some of you diehards, it was already over after 1981 !)
