Okay, that's way too much absurdity about Toyah. Back to the topic of this thread...

Payolas - Eyes Of A Stranger (which came in at #21 on the top 500 new wave songs as voted by forum members) - this song sounds like it should be played on a lite rock station sandwiched in between Kenny G and Lionel Richie. Not that it's a bad song per se, but it definitely does not sound the slightest bit new wave to me, perhaps others may disagree, but that's just my opinion.

Anything by the Chameleons - I think they had 3 songs on the top 500 new wave songs and I hate each and every one of them... yuk.

I think some of the songs played on "alternative" stations back in the day got on the playlist cause they had a great, unique sound and stations like KROQ knew that mainstream radio didn't have the balls to attempt playing them. That included borderline, eclectic stuff, reggae and even early Prince.

"Eyes Of A Stranger" does have a dark, foreboding feel that embodies many "New Wave" songs and reggae/ska was a big influence on many new bands at the time. I get that it's not a pure New Wave song but an AC love song it aint. UB40 or Thompson Twins would be a better fit in the context you described.

Actually the adult contemporary radio around here has recently gotten terrible (hey, I happen to like adult contemporary, provided it's from the 80's.) Now it basically sounds like a classic rock station (which is every other non-rap non-country station around here anyway) and throws in a few "current" adult contemporary songs which are all ass-terrible.

Shouldn't the Payola$ technically be classified as CanCon? I can see the new-wavyness of that band sorta, and I quite like them, some of their songs are simply weird, like "Female Hands" for example, but as the band went on they became much more "pop" oriented. I actually have a test pressing of "You're the Only Love" by Paul Hyde & The Payola$ and it might actually be my favorite song by that band though I wouldn't call it new wave at all, it's basically adult contemporary.
