Name That Tune, May 2011 -- answers and winner!

Postby rsgonzalez » Mon May 02, 2011 10:42 am

It's time for another Name That Tune! I started doing these in January 2007, and this is my tenth one. To celebrate this milestone, I'm actually going to offer a prize to the winner.

Rules are the same. Twenty songs, with one point for correct song and one point for correct artist, for a total of 40 possible points. Send me your answers with the "Email poster" button or at rsgonzalez(at)gmail.com. Please do not post any answers here!

Since this is my tenth Name That Tune, first place wins $10 straight out of my pocket, which will be sent to the winner via PayPal. (I didn't say it was a *big* prize ...)

This will be my last Name That Tune for a while, and possibly for good. I enjoy doing them, but I need a break.

You've got three weeks. The deadline is Monday, May 23 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Good luck, and enjoy!

We should be paying you $10 for taking the time to put these great contests together!

Sending in my answers, I think I got 11 bands and songs, so 22 points. Some tough ones to identify, look forward to finding out who the rest are.

I've never claimed to have a monopoly on them. Other folks did them before I started, and anyone who wants to make them is more than welcome to, whether I continue or not.

Thanks for carrying the NTT torch! I feel bad that I haven't participated in many your past challenges. This one was good ... started off nice and easy and then it socks it to ya![;)]

That was a fun one! I know the "cash prize" may have been a little odd, but I wondered whether adding incentives might change the participation level. And the answer is, not really -- only two people played who had never given it a shot before. There were 10 players total, which is above average but not super-high.

As I said before, this will be my last one for a while, and possibly forever. We shall see ...

Of course, you all want to know who won! Let's count down.

3rd place: BigBri and Panorama tied with 22 points
2nd place: Jim2 and MikeP tied with 24 points

And the winner!

1st place: SomebodySomewhere with 28 points

I like the way this turned out. SomebodySomewhere won my very first Name That Tune, back in January 2007, also with 28 points! SomebodySomewhere, if you want the $10 prize, give me an e-mail address I can PayPal the cash to.

Honorable mention goes to Raserx, who worked together with his friends to identify 19 of the 20 songs. They only missed #15.

Here's the breakdown of the answers and scoring:

01. A-Ha - Take On Me (10 got the artist; 10 got the song)
02. The Producers - What's He Got (5 got the artist; 5 got the song)
03. The Fixx - One Thing Leads To Another (10 got the artist; 10 got the song)
04. The Polecats - Make A Circuit With Me (8 got the artist; 8 got the song)
05. Tears For Fears - Mad World (9 got the artist; 8 got the song)
06. Seona Dancing - More To Lose (2 got the artist; 2 got the song)
07. Fischer-Z - So Long (6 got the artist; 6 got the song)
08. Combo Audio - Romanticide (7 got the artist; 7 got the song)
09. PhD - Little Suzi's On The Up (2 got the artist; 2 got the song)
10. The Cure - The Exploding Boy (3 got the artist; 3 got the song)
11. Katrina And The Waves - Do You Want Crying (1 got the artist; 1 got the song)
12. Department S - Going Left Right (4 got the artist; 4 got the song)
13. The Armoury Show - Castles In Spain (4 got the artist; 3 got the song)
14. Peter Godwin - Images Of Heaven (8 got the artist; 8 got the song)
15. Urban Verbs - Subways (0 got the artist; 0 got the song)
16. Our Daughter's Wedding - Lawnchairs (9 got the artist; 9 got the song)
17. Men At Work - Helpless Automaton (3 got the artist; 3 got the song)
18. Joe Jackson - It's Different For Girls (6 got the artist; 6 got the song)
19. Shriekback - Lined Up (7 got the artist; 7 got the song)
20. Kitchen And The Plastic Spoons - Happy Funeral (0 got the artist; 0 got the song)

And, as always, links to the "hard ones":

I think that was the last one I participated in before this. Nah, I'm good on the money front. Thanks. Split it between Jim and Mike.

P.S. Who or what is Kitchen and the Plastic Spoons?

... Wouldn't it be appropriate for the winner of the last NTT to do the next one(s)?
