Freeez - Gonna Get You (Deluxe Expanded Edition)

Freeez - Gonna Get You (Deluxe Expanded Edition)

Postby Luke » Tue Jul 19, 2011 7:56 pm

Hello, my name is Luke and this is my first message here on the NWO because I like this site so much.

Finally, on August 29 there is going to be a Deluxe Expanded Edition of the album Gonna Get You by Freeez. Most people know them from the mega hit in the summer of 1983 (I.O.U.). The release will contain 2 discs and will be released by SFE (Strike Force Entertainment), which belongs to Cherry Red. This will be the tracklisting:

Disc One

We Got The Juice
Can't Keep My Love
Love's Gonna Get You
Pop Goes My Love
I.O.U.
Freezin'
Can You
Watch Me
Gonna Get You (Megamix)

Disc Two

I.O.U. (7" Version)
I Dub U (I don't know if this is the 7" or the 12" version!)
We Got The Jazz
Pop Goes My Love (7" Version)
Scratch Goes My Dub (7" Version)
Love's Gonna Get You (7" Version)
Love's Gonna Get You (Instrumental)
No Need For Greed (Part One)
No Need For Greed (Part Two)
I.O.U. (Megamix)
Scratch Goes My Dub (Full Version)
Love's Gonna Get You (Original Mix)
A Cappella U

We know that last year SFE was responsible for the 3-disc version of Blast (1st solo album by FGTH's Holly Johnson) and although it was a decent release, there were some vinyl rips on it which were very bad. (Holly's 2nd solo album will also be available on August 29 by SFE in a 3-disc version, but that's maybe another topic for someone else).

Now, I was worried by SFE that they will also use vinyl rips on this new edition (which, by the way, was NEVER released on CD before), so I send an email to SFE this week. A day later I got a reply from Barney Ashton and he said:

"Thanks for your recent e-mail.

Vinyl rips are used by SFE only when THERE IS NO SURVIVING MASTER - I can't speak on behalf of other labels but we include such tracks for the sake of completeness for the specialist collectors market. All the tracks on this re-issue are mastered from tapes hald by the originating company Beggars Banquet.

Best wishes, Barney"

Now that's good news, also because the original company (Beggars Banquet) is involved in providing the tapes. I hope this will satisfy a lot of people which are fans of Arthur Baker's/John Robie's music, especially Freeez, from 1983.

Cheers everybody! ;-)

Hey Luke,

You made my day (hey, maybe even my year for that matter!!) I've always been a HUGE John Robie fan and am desperately trying to obtain what I can of his extensive discography mastered properly on compact disc. I'm also a tremendous fan of Arthur Baker, but it's Robie's work that I'm obsessed with. I've searched the web over the years and can hardly find any biographical information about the guy. Where everyone these days seems to have a site or a social networking page, Mr. Robie does not (which is fine by me as I do not have a page myself - I do like my privacy.) However, I do wish that some day, he's honored for his groundbreaking music and celebrated properly for the impact he's made on electronic music, remixing and production techniques. His syllabic solo on Freeez's "I.Dub.U." is nothing short of jaw-dropping!! And speaking of fierce Emulator playing, I was so happy to get his "Dancing On The Fire" on CD which he co-produced and played on on Jellybean's EP "Wotupski" recently released on Gold Legion records. The guy is a marvel. Too bad the liner notes didn't extensively praise the guy the way I believe they should!!!

Anyway, I am so happy about the Freeez release. I do hope it contains the Latin Rascals remix of "I.O.U." as well. Oh, and speaking of Freeez, will they ever release John Rocca's solo stuff? I can not find his "I Want It To Be Real" anywhere. I fear that this master tape is lost for good. One can hope Arthur Baker has it in his archive or Ben Liebrand can do an incredible vinyl rip like he always does.

Again, Luke thanks for this news. It's more of John Robie's discography I can add to my collection.

Cheers!!!

Jeffrey, the release will not include the Latin Rascals Remix from 1986/1987. That one was not from the 1983 period, so I guess that's the reason why it was not included. Besides, I think there is no more (second) disc space left (only on the first disc).

But you can find a House Mix on this one:

I remember these Dance Classics The Remixes series released in our country back in 1989/1990. I still have all these discs. Some remixes are awful by the way.

Great news! I still have this on cassette, but not listened to it for years, since I don't have a tape player any more.

I only hope Cherry Red make a good job of it, and it doesn't end up like the Belouis Some disaster...

I wasn't really interested at the time but may give this a listen - am i right that the 12" of Pop Goes My Love isn't included or is the LP mix the same as the 12"?

DavePlym, The album mix of Pop Goes My Love is indeed the 12 inch mix. But the album mix fot I.O.U. is not the same as the 12 inch mix. That 12 inch mis is called the Megamix and is on the second disc.

Cheers :-)
