just purchased a great book today at Barnes and Noble
The Encyclopedia of New Wave

full color and pretty extensive mini bios of the major and minor bands in a - z fashion and lot of other tidbits throughout the publication

it is very well thought out and well designed!

the book is great except for a few omissions of some key artist/bands:
Blancmange, Midnight Oil, The Bangles,Joan Jett, Love and Rockets, Sisters of Mercy, Violent Femmes, The Blasters, Kid Creole

artists and bands that should have not been in this book (and in my opinion were never considered new wave! )
Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, The Tubes, Matthew Wilder, Cutting Crew, Nu Shooz,Level 42, and Simply Red

also, Bryan Ferry is included, but is more of an influence from his Roxy Music days and Sparks, which is fine, but is not focused on their output from 80-86 which was in their new wave heyday (so to speak)
there should have been a influences page: Roxy Music, Bowie, Iggy Pop, Velvet Underground, etc

I know that a person cannot cover everything, but if the above left out bands were in and the others were severely edited out, it would be right up there!

Looks like we all have differing definitions of what new wave is.

the book had a lot of Goth bands: Siouxsie, The Cult, The Cure, Bauhaus, etc and even power pop (Knack, Romantics) and punk-rock based (Pretenders)
she fits in there

Hmm I'd question Midnight Oil as new wave. The are pretty firmly regarded as Oz-Rock down here....

Sounds like an interesting read though for sure.

Had a quick flick through (and left a comment on Amazon) and there's not much I haven't seen before. It'll be fine for beginners to give them a taste of new wave.

One of the best books for the era is 'Up Yours!' by Vernon Joynson.

I have it and love adding it to my collection. The presentation, full color pages and very heavy, is stunning. Though it does leave a lot out, as well as has some questionability about who actually was New Wave. The list mentioned earlier in this thread is a perfect example.

There are also some factual inacurracies. Berlin's 'No More Words' was not on 'Pleasure Victim', and Blondie's 'Parallel Lines' was released in 1978, not 1979. And they completely forgot 'Eat To The Beat'. I am only in C's right now.

So I didn't get it for the information more so than the presentation. Plus, I'm all for supporting such an effort and it was clearly a labor of love, even if it only skims the surface.

Just bought the book at Barnes and Noble for $24.95. Not much new but the writing is funny and the pics are great. Makes me wonder, how can we get New Wave Theater digitally remastered and available on dvd????

Next someone is gonna claim R.E.M. weren't New Wave either.

As for Level 42, put them in the Douche Wave category.

It is from the US one. The UK one is a lot cheaper.

The Tubes excellent song "Prime Time" , which is early & pre-dates their MTV "She's a Beauty" era stuff, I'd consider in the category...

Cyndi Lauper's ("Pre Cyndi Lauper"

), 1st band Blue Angel , deserve to be in the category if the Stray Cats are ..

Some of these questionable bands seem to be a regional thing ..
here in NY/NJ, Early Cyndi L, Joan Jett & Madonna's Burning Up (Local Artists), all got play on WLIR, & area New Wave Clubs .. But you never heard Hewey Lewis, Level 42 or Cutting Crew ... But I've heard in other areas of the Country they were in the rotation on similar stations / clubs ( KROQ?) .....
