English Beat reissues!

Do you know if the reissues are also remasters? Sometimes a reissue is simply an unremastered version with new packaging and song selection. And if some or all of the songs are remastered, is the remastering quality the same on the different versions (Edsel, Shout)?

I picked up the Edsel version of Special Beat Service. I haven't listened to the discs yet, but the DVD is good. NTSC Region 0. There are some quality issues with the "Save It For Later Video" (some lines of distortion run through it in a couple of places) but overall the quality is good, and the live version of "Mirror In The Bathroom" is worth the price of admission alone. I will probably get the 2 other Edsel sets at some point along with that standalone Us Festival DVD.

There's no excuse for the lines of distortion running through the video. I don't mind when it's not crystal clear knowing the age of the video but they can take the time to find one that doesn't have white lines running through it. There's enough of this video floating around that they could have got it from someone else. Anyways, doesn't the person who put this together feel annoyed that they a such a nice job with the box, tracklisting, etc. and now finding out the first video on the dvd has lines running through it. Yes, they have been remastered (from the original master tapes, as stated on the Shout Factory box). I read somewhere (can't remember where now) that the same mastering engineer is responsible for both the Shout Factory box set and Edsel reissues.

The Complete Beat looks good......just wondered why there were no Demo's on that compilation as there are some that do exist.

I have had the Edsel releases for a couple of weeks now. The CDs are fantastic, they sound great. The DVDs - No issues with the release in "I Just Can't Stop It".

SBS - minor quibble, the previously mentioned issue with the odd line in the "Save It For Later" video. The bonus feature footage makes up for this, would have liked to have seen more footage from that concert, assuming they played more than just those three songs.

Wha'ppen - The same minor quibble with the "Doors of Your Heart" video as with "Save It For Later". Larger issue was the DVD freezing at the "bonus feature" menu - "Get A Job" and "Stand Down Margaret" with a couple of interviews from some documentary. I haven't been able to watch it on any of my players. I'll try on a friend's computer DVD drive (I don't have one on my machine) and see if I can access it. Turns out this is a known issue, an e-mail sent to the the label was answered within one day, with an offer to ship a replacement DVD. Great customer service response on that one.

My decision to go with the Edsel releases was mainly for the extra music tracks and the DVDs. All things considered, I'm happy with my decision. I have some tracks from the Boston show on lp and cassette, when they appeared on the "What Is Beat?" compilation.

The Beat are such a fantastic band, I couldn't resist and bought both:
The 3 Edsel deluxe reissues (more bonus tracks & dvds with videos/totp) and also the very-nice looking Shout Factory box set(includes the US Festival CD/DVD). I also like the Shout Rarities cd very much which collects (nearly) all the 12" versions together in one place.

No regrets so far...

Why would you not in todays day and age re-do the vids in PCM? Just received these Edsel releases and was disappointed in the sound (compressed) on the vids, AC3. Now I have to do it myself. Urgggh

Now I see what you guys were complaining about on the vid quality. Hah, they couldn't find the masters, so they cut some of the vids off of VHS tape directly and didn't even edit or mask the noise. LOL, wow, how sad in todays age is that. Maybe Edsel should just stick to sound tracks and leave the video reissues to others. On another note, the Bananarama DVD release of the promos was top notch, PCM sound and the works. Good job Rhino, maybe Edsel should hire away a couple of your folks to get it right on video.

Update: I take that back about the Bananarama DVD release videos, great job on the film but the sound has something to desire even though it says PCM, some of my analog laserdisc cuts sound better.
