Abecedarians - Eureka (CD/Vinyl - 4 Dec)

Abecedarians - Eureka (CD/Vinyl - 4 Dec)

Postby roc51 » Fri Oct 26, 2012 8:53 pm

For the first time ever, Abecedarians classic LP Eureka is being issued on CD. Additionally, it will be released on double vinyl alongside a bonus CD of period tracks previously unavailable. This bonus CD will only be included with the limited edition colour double vinyl.

This project has been a labour of love that has been done with the direct involvement of the band over the past year.

I've pre-ordered this, the Abedecarians Eureka Experience Package (double colour vinyl, bonus cd, standard cd, t-shirt, sticker) and can be ordered direct from Pylon Records website:

Details: http://pylonrecords.com/

On December 4th, 2012, Pylon Records will release, The Abecedarians Eureka album in its entirety for the first time on vinyl and CD. The band fronted by Chris Manecke, John Blake & Kevin Dolan , have roots in both post-punk and atmospheric 4AD pop, much like the Joy Division/New Order axis. They are also the only American band to have a single on the legendary Factory Records.

This release collects all the songs from the Eureka era, including the demos, which were mixed down in the early 90s. Eureka will be a double vinyl, in a beautiful card stock gatefold jacket with a UV varnish of the memorable artwork, which has been restored, full lyric sheet and unseen photos of the band.

The first 300 copies of the Eureka album will be on blue colored vinyl, which will also come with a bonus Cd, that will include rest of the Eureka era tracks. This will be only available from the Pylon website, the bonus cd will not be available with the commercial Cd or the regular black vinyl version.

1) Ghosts
2) Soil
3) Beneath The City Of The Hedonistic Bohemians
4) I Glide
5) Mice & Coconut Tree
6) Misery Of Cities
7) Smiling Monarchs
8) Benway's Carnival
9) Switch
10) Other Side Of The Fence
11) They Said Tomorrow
12) Wildflower
13) John's Pop
14) Spaghetti Western

God frakking dammit--why do they have to mess around with the formats like this? I don't have a record player so I'm going to have to buy the vinyl and a CD to get everything being released? Just overcharge me for a bloody double CD.

/rant over/ This is great news; it's about time.

Agree, I think we've grown out of the t-shirt/sticker thing! You think? I for one will not be ordering the limited package, don't need the albums, t-shirt or the sticker. Guess I'll have to go without the x-tra CD. If it was significant enough it would have been sold separate.
But, I'm darn glad for the CD release.

Wonder if the CD is from the original master tapes or done from vinyl. The site does not give those details. Like many, I've taken my vinyl to CD and cleaned it up to sound flawless, so if the CD release is from vinyl it would not make sense to buy it for me. If from master tapes, then definitely I would.

Wonder if this means AB-CD, Resin, etc are next.

It would help if they said exactly what was on the bonus CD so we could decide whether or not it's significant. If they're the early demos that have been circulating online that's not too exciting. Even so, I might spring for the limited package anyway, if only because it sounds like the band's heavily involved with this and they've earned it.

The main CD is actually a pretty good deal–all of Eureka (both versions) + 'Smiling Monarchs' / 'Benways Carnival' 12" + it looks like some of the tracks from Other Side of the Fence (I assume 'They Said Tommorrow' is from there rather than the version on Scream: the Compilation, tho I'd prefer the latter.) I wonder why they didn't include Resin while they were at it. Looks good I guess, but I was hoping LTM would have done these reissues...

Again, punish the people who buy cd's. Why is there no option to just get the cd and the bonus cd? It's like when they give bonus tracks for people who download and not people who buy cd's. [:(!]

Just thinking, maybe if a handful of us write to the label they will create the cd + bonus cd option.

Get over it. Although somewhat derivative, this is one of the best American bands ever. I'm happy to pay extra for the bonus CD. Given that it's almost impossible for artists to make money from CD sales, I don't blame them for the added extraneous stuff.

Totally agree...I've bought the bundle due to the fact the band is getting paid directly. The label has already said (at least now) that the bonus CD will not be offered on its own. I believe these are from the original masters, but I'm checking.

I've asked both LTM and Words On Music about reissuing the back catalogue in the past and both said they were looking into it...now we know why...this label is local and already reissued fellow cult post-punk/new wave band Iron Curtain, also part of the LA underground.

I did ask and they did respond. The bonus cd is only intended for the bundle package. The label had to really convince the band to do it just for the bundle package because they had no intention of releasing this bonus cd at all.

The person who wrote me back is very friendly and appears to be a big fan of the Abecedarians himself.

Barmy's right though, let's just be happy they are releasing this. [:D]

I got a similar response, and yes I'll suck it up and get the vinyl deal. It does worry me that reissue labels seem more interested of late in putting stuff on vinyl than CD (for instance, Beggars Archives seem to have given up on CD reissues entirely to shift focus to vinyl.) While both are preferable to digital reissues, I'm not convinced that the recent return to vinyl is going to last.

But, at the end of the day, this is still better than dropping a Ben Franklin on a used copy of AB-CD.

Agreed on the vinyl thing. I'm totally over vinyl. CDs are dinosaurish enough! Yes, vinyl is better. But then 35mm film projection was better than digital. Need to move on. As I said, this is/was an awesome band and giving them a few extra $ in honor of what they created is fine by me. I won't play the vinyl but will wear the t-shirt!
