Great news especially these being remastered by Calum Malcolm though there is quite a lot of material missing from these.

The 12" Promo of Tinseltown In The Rain is the same length as the album version. I wonder what the difference is between the two. Besides that, the single version is absent here.

Real shame about these reissues. I'm sure the sound quality will be better but why so few bonus tracks? There were two B-sides on the Downtown Lights single and only one is on the reissue. Odd.

These are out now in the UK and available as downloads in the US. I agree that there should have been more bonus tracks, but Paul Buchanan "curated" them, so I guess we should blame him!

Maybe a best of /rest of 2cd set would be nice with one disc containing all the hits while the other could be a collection of bsides etc.

My copies arrived today and I just gave them a fairly thorough listen. As for "Hats", there is very AUDIBLE distortion on all tracks - less of a problem on the livelier ones but it does get very annoying on the quieter ones - "Let's Go Out Tonight" (unlistenable from 2:15 onwards), "7 AM" (4:00 onwards) and "From A Late Night Train" (2:49 and 3:29 being the most obvious ones). There's the odd crackle on "A Walk Across The Rooftops" too (the loud bits in "From Rags To Riches"; "Stay" from 2:00 onwards); on the bonus disc "Stay (Little Mix)" is completely distorted). All in all very frustrating, especially given the band's previous perfectionism. After the shoddy Aztec Camera remasters this is unfortunately just another case of bad quality control. Shame on everyone involved!

Although I await further reviews, the above is hardly surprising.

Remasters to me are often about extra tracks. Few remasters of existing tracks seem to improve the originals, even if the originals pale in comparison to vinyl. And sorry, I'm over vinyl. The 80s CDs actually were surprisingly listenable compared to the re-issues coming out today. Good times...

Re: the comments about A Walk . . (I haven't got 'hats' yet) I can't agree, they make it sound as though this release equals Journeys To Glory for crapness. Not the case. I played the whole thing through last night and it sounds great, the depth and clarity breathes new life into this album. It's not 'loud' although it was after turning the volume up. I couldn't find the distortion on the original Stay and the noise mentioned on the quietest sections seems like ambient room noise at the point of recording (I've a CD by someone with just a piano secion which is 'ruined' because you can hear them pressing the wooden pedals). As for the bonus tracks, supposedly only one track is listed as unreleased however I've never heard the alt mixes of the known songs so for me they're 'new' plus I'd only heard I Love This Life tracks on a poor MP3 so I nearly cried for joy at those. I do agree there's an audio flaw on stay (little mix) but it sounds like an early demo and most parts of the music are clear with just a tiny (and I mean tiny) distortion on the loudest parts of the vocal and being a demo that's probably down to the original 4 or 8 track recording, not the reissue. I know some on here will say 'i'll take a raincheck on this' because of the criticism, which is a shame, but as someone who listens to music rather than analyses I think this reissue is great.

I don't know if you've listened through headphones but there is actually very audible crackle in the louder sections, definitely more than just a "tiny" bit of distortion or "ambient room noise", as you call it. Unfortunately this (mal)practice has become rather common now and people like yourself seem to accept and even defend it. I've discussed the "Hats" issue on Amazon and others have picked up on it too. I agree with you that the mastering, albeit on the loud side, is superior to the originals, which makes it all the more frustrating. That and the fact that some vital b-sides have been omitted render this edition anything but "deluxe".

I just got word that there are different versions of "Hats" out there - some with, some without the dreaded distortion, so I guess it's fair to assume that the problem is down to a manufacturing and not a mastering fault.
