Siouxsie / Banshees remasters
The fundamental message of this thread is don't sell/discard your old CDs when remasters come out. Just random examples are Cocteau Twins and Banshees. The 80s (or whenever) CDs had their flaws, but I tend to go back to them. And I, too, no longer automatically buy remasters of stuff I already have.
Exactly! There's not a thing wrong with the original cds in most cases, anyway, unless they're "not loud enough" for your ipod or whatever. I still buy the reissues when the bonus tracks, etc. lure me in, sure - but hardly ever does the remastered album sound "better". It's usually squashed and brickwalled.
Always hang on to your originals, especially if you listen to your music on a proper home stereo system - remember them? [:D]

I remember reading on this forum a while back how nice the KW reissues were ,and how pleased everyone was with CR. Maybe to an audio expert they would've sounded flawed but to a lot of us they seemed beyond fine.

I'm not an audio expert but I do have a high-end stereo system.

The most annoying complaints here are when someone says "there's a 1 second drop off at 1:36 of whatever 12 inch version". Who cares?

But fact is, many bands benefit from a softer, even muddier, sound, from earlier CDs. I have RARELY listened to remasters and thought they rendered the prior versions redundant. Extras are the key--that will make me buy.
I had the first 3 Kim Wilde albums on CR, and they were remarkably brickwalled and painful to listen to. Nice booklets though. I disposed of them and kept my 'Originals' boxed set, and the Very Best Of CD with the B Sides.

Weren't the Kim Wilde reissues just nice, guys? A couple of issues they had ("Teases & Dares" album) didn't make me any problems to listen to them with pleasure at all. Some archive stuff is very hard to find and it's much better to include a vinyl rip-off than nothing at all. Even Kim didn't have some of the bonuses that should've been included on herself. Booklets were a pleasure to read. If only all the Cherry Red reissues could be as great as this. Bloody Universal should've given them approval to continue with all the remaining MCA reissues of hers - "Close", "Love Moves", "Love Is." and "Now & Forever".
The "Originals" CD box-set is too expensive to get but a nice collectors item all the way.

Hi Sensoria

Thanks for the nice comments about our Kim Wilde reissues - 99% of her fans were really happy with them, but we still had a number of people upset about vinyl rips / cover colours etc.

We could easily have left off the (very) few rare tracks which were sourced from vinyl, but better to have them cleaned up and included than not on there at all. Kim and Universal had no trace of the original masters for these tracks in US / UK / Germany archives, so there was no other option.

Who knows what will happen with Close and Love Moves? The requests to licence them as double CD sets went in nearly 2 years ago and have been chased a number of times since - stony silence.

So my next project is likely to be a Katrina & the Waves 'Alternative Singles Collection' featuring all of the original band members but newer versions of the tracks. Watch this space!

Hi back again, Steve!

You're very welcome again!

I do know you made the requests to licence "Close" and "Love Moves" nearly 2 years ago. But having heard nothing from them back ever since is just so very bad. Maybe they will reissue the first by the end of the year themselves as this year sees exactly 25 years since its original release. You and Marcel Rijs gave them the perfect tracklisting. So who knows? Anything's possible. I guess they just don't want to let money slipping through their fingers by rejecting to do reissues themselves anymore. They saw what profit they can make if they release some certain reissues themselves, and not giving them to another label to do them instead. It's all about the money again. Sad but true. I'd rather see you doing it than them when you started the Kim Wilde series already.

Looking forward to your next efforts!

The requests to Cherry Red can be sent in the Suggestion Box on their official site: http://www.cherryred.co.uk/. Just scroll down a bit and you'll find it. I always got the answer back every time I contacted them. [:)]

> Some archive stuff is very hard to find and it's much better to include a vinyl rip-off than nothing at all.

The main thing about sourcing from vinyl is to be honest and upfront about it. Make sure it is clear, and say exactly which tracks are from vinyl.

I don't know how most labels go about it, but it seems that those ZTT reissues used multiple vinyls of the same track, then took the best parts to use. Would it be possible to digitize several copies of the same 12"/track, then do a waveform comparison to nuke out what isn't the same between two (or more)?

> So my next project is likely to be a Katrina & the Waves 'Alternative Singles Collection' featuring all of the original band members but newer versions of the tracks.

A long time ago, I wished Depeche Mode had done that with some of their tracks, because those Hammersmith Odeon 1982 live versions sounded pretty good. But that was before Dave's voice sounded like a lounge singer's.

Yes, that's totally understandable.
