The last two Spandau Ballet albums reissues coming

The last two Spandau Ballet albums reissues coming

Postby Sensoria » Wed Feb 27, 2013 6:38 am

According to some news, Cherry Pop Records will reissue the last two Spandau Ballet albums during this year, "Through The Barricades" (1986) and "Heart Like A Sky" (1989).
Both albums originally were released for CBS/Columbia Records/Sony Music label.
The former spawned the singles "Fight For Ourselves", "Through The Barricades" and "How Many Lies", whereas the latter did the same with singles "Raw", "Be Free With Your Love", "Empty Spaces" and "Crashed Into Love".
"Through The Barricades" reached No. 7 in the UK album charts, whereas "Heart Like A Sky" made it only #31 but achieving notable success in Italy and Holland.
No further details yet.

Guess the label decided to farm these ones out to Cherry Red as there was no chance for big sales.

Now all of their album reissue treatment process would be finished. EMI did the preceding four ones - "Journey To Glory", "Diamond", "True" and "Parade" - in 2010. I'm looking forward to "Heart Like A Sky" the most as various "Raw" remixes were just brilliant. Pity that their maturest album in their whole opus charted as low as this. The Art Of Noise's Gary Langan produced it.

HLAS was definitely a better album overall. Hope that CR obtains the correct masters and doesn't fuck up.

The Journey To Glory reissue was a complete cock-up. Awful masters etc.

I quite like Through The Barricades. It didn't come out in the US until 1987. "How Many Lies" was the first single.

Yes, most of the EMI remasters were a complete cock-up indeed which is very sad, in fact. Their former home label, a major one and yet such bad pressings. Spandau Ballet certainly didn't deserve that. Majors should be knowing their job better, definitely. Luckily, the "Diamond" one suffered a whole lot less.
Duran Duran EMI '80s remasters had many issues as well.

"Through The Barricades" was a big arena album aimed to rock stadiums all over the world. I quite like it too. But "Heart Like A Sky" was better, IMO. It was more consistent and production was better. Gary Langan (one of my favourite producers ever, BTW) always knew his stuff. The album should've entered the Top 15 in the UK charts at least. But in times of Acid House and Stock, Aitken & Waterman mass production it just didn't have a chance, sadly.

"Heart like a sky" was a so so album, but "TTB" was complete bollocks and made my ears bleed, not a patch on "Diamond" or "JTG" which are their best albums IMHO.

Neither 2disc deluxe cd would compel me to buy or even DL for free should it show up on the net.

"Journey To Glory" and "Diamond" are my favourite albums of theirs too. They were at their creative peak during their time. There's no question about it. I'm not as mad about "Through The Barricades" but just like some of the songs on. The title track is the best one. But again, I'm not as mad about them as I am about "To Cut A Long Story Short" or "Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On)", for example - the latter being my favourite single of theirs.

My Spandau Ballet album rank would be looking like this:
1. Diamond
2. Journey To Glory
3. True
4. Heart Like A Sky
5. Parade
6. Through The Barricades

Thank you, profil! [:)]
I've always loved funk and tribal sound of "Diamond". The concept of first side being funky and the other one tribal is yet another reason why I like it the way I do. "Journey To Glory" did just well in all that early '80s New Romantic thing and is a great winter album as well. "True" was their trademark, and "Heart Like A Sky" their maturest effort ever, as I said earlier on. Although they included some good songs (mainly singles) too, "Parade" and "Through The Barricades" were very pale albums in comparison to the aforementioned four I've ranked higher. Both suffered of that mid '80s fate when almost all the pop and pop-rock oriented artists of the time sounded the same.

Yes, but that's just it. The rest of the album is not that good.
Generally speaking, Spandau Ballet were a great singles band too. I wish there was a complete(!) singles collection released already. The one that sums band's all, Chrysalis/EMI, Columbia/Sony and Mercury/Universal periods up like this:

CD1:
1. To Cut A Long Story Short (1980)
2. The Freeze (1981)
3. Musclebound (Edit) (1981)
4. Glow (1981)
5. Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On) (1981)
6. Paint Me Down (1981)
7. She Loved Like Diamond (1982)
8. Instinction (Edit) (1982)
9. Lifeline (1982)
10. Communication (Edit) (1983)
11. True (1983)
12. Gold (1983)
13. Pleasure (1983)

CD2:
1. Only When You Leave (1984)
2. I'll Fly For You (1984)
3. Highly Strung (1984)
4. Round And Round (1984)
5. Fight For Ourselves (1986)
6. Through The Barricades (1986)
7. How Many Lies (1987)
8. Raw (1988)
9. Be Free With Your Love (1989)
10. Empty Spaces (1989)

"Round And Round" has got to be one of the most under-rated tracks by Spandau Ballet. Discovered it only a few years ago (it probably released before my third birthday - hence I have a legitimate excuse!).
