I lived through the early 80s in small town America, and my memory is that mainstream 80s music was HORRIBLE. Bon Jovi. Bryan Adams. Huey Lewis. Springsteen. Genesis. Hall and Oates. Loverboy. Foreigner. Air Supply. Starship. Wham. Bob Seger. Lionel Richie. Eddie Rabbitt. More lame-ass hair metal than you could shake a coke straw at.

You either headed for the underground, or you died a slow, agonizing death. We had MTV, but I don't remember having access to a good college radio station until 1986. I just wish that I had known about all the fantastic early 80s UK bands back then.

I love the Bangles earlier music but those songs you mentioned were written by Prince, Jules Shear (If She Knew What She Wants) and Walk Like An Egyptian was cover song which was more annoying than worst since that is sadly the song the Bangles will be know for the most!

The Bangles, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett, and Pat Benetar (to name a few) are all artists who minted their coin singing songs written by professional songwriters such as Billy Steinberg. http://www.sodajerker.com/episode-1-billy-steinberg/

Neither Elvis Presley nor Frank Sinatra ever put pen to paper. And with few exceptions, every popular Rod Stewart song was written by someone else.

Then there's The Wrecking Crew, the studio musician collaboration that provided the actual sound for too many hits to mention but most notably The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations", "California Girls", Pet Sounds, "Mr. Tambourine Man" by The Byrds, songs from The Mamas & the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Nat King Cole and many others.

And there's Carole King and the rest of the Brill Building writers who churned out hundreds of hits for other Pop artists including "Save the Last Dance for Me", "Devil in Disguise", "The Loco-Motion", "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", "Will You Love Me, Tomorrow", "Don't Be Cruel", "A Groovy Kind of Love", etc...

All interesting trivia but so what? I don't think it makes the songs any less meaningful.

the Bangles "All Over the Place" was 90% composed by them and "Different Light" was about 75% and "Everything" about 50%

No comment on whether a song is meaningful-- which is subjective anyway.

In the case of the Bangles, I suggested that their suckitude (subjective opinion) may be correlated to the outsourcing of their craft to hired-guns. No, there's nothing new about this-- the history of the music business is definitely solidly in line with the Bangles model than the Beatles one. What interested me is the result of that bargain-- in this case the mention of a once-promising band among the crappiest of the entire decade.

Obviously a lot of happy customers bought all of those <strike>product</strike> records, though, so there's no accounting for taste. And of course the band members got paid, which no doubt takes the sting away from any criticism they've received.
