Depeche Mode 2013 reissues

Postby discoginfo » Sun Aug 25, 2013 4:44 pm

After hearing a "forbidden" album "Goretrax and Lost Mixes" (which I first though was fan made mixes) I realize there are lots of unreleased old versions and mixes in the vaults of depeche Mode/Mute. Even though I guess Depeche themself don't want to issue these early versions (simply because they have nothing to gain from it, except more Money, which they probably don't need anyway) but for fans it would be nice to hear. But there is surely enough material for big deluxe sets for all their albums, including demos and unreleased finished tracks. /JW

<br>Yes Joseph Watt (Mr Razormaid) remixed more or less everyone in the 80s. Usually he only re-edited, meaning he didn't change the sound or mix as such, but made parts longer by looping and repeating parts (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, keeping the original intact while making it longer). But I found out these mixes he/they did weren't always properly authorized, at least not by the artists themselves (it may have been via a standard licensing through the record company, leaving the artist out of the process) (I found this out while working on my book on Yello). Also they were usually sold exclusively, mainly on a subscription basis to DJs. So, licensing those mixes might be hard, although I have seen some mixes on some CDs. Finally, on CD 2, I beleieve I calculated the total duration (78 min is maximum) which is also why I had to leave some out (there is a solution, to give the missing mixes out for free as MP3, but of course that's not ideal :) Thanks/JW

I wasn't suggesting that you bother with it at all but thank you for the acknowledgement [:)]
I wish they would just release a compilation of unreleased mixes (not that iTunes mess) and be done with it.
I also agree that 'Best of Vol 2' (w/ DVD) is long overdue. I don't care if DM hates the early videos, it's not about them.
True, Razormaid! was a DJ subscription service (that blossomed into a bit more over time).
True, the majority of tracks were re-edits (tailored for DJs obviously) but not all of them. Of course the same could be said for many extended versions from the 80's.
I have read more than once about bands from the 80's having very little knowledge of their own singles beyond the track itself. So it's not necessarily odd that the record company would allow promotion of what they already owned without band consent.
I know people exist that don't care for Razormaid!. I love a lot of what they did. I think because they were promotional, limited & based in the U.S. that it's easier for fans to dismiss Razormaid! as unofficial and unworthy. <- Just my opinion & not directed at anyone specifically.
IMO, the 'U.S. Black & Blue Version' of Master & Servant kicks the cr@p out of the 'Slavery Whip Mix'. 'Cause I don't know about you but after the 200th time hearing "Treat me like a dog" it's no longer entertaining.
But I digress. The DM mixes were commercially available and regardless of what people think of them it's sad that they've been ignored for decades.

I'm so glad Razormaid! Productions are being discussed here. I've been a fan since their inception and Joseph Watt is a genius!! Anyone interested should go to their website and read their history as it is fascinating. Mr. Watt was very loyal to Depeche Mode and instilled the mixes with a lot of integrity. Same thing with Dead Or Alive. Joseph could pick out all the best parts of a song and mix/edit/remix them into excitement. He cares about sound and remastering as well. The man was one of the first to mix in key so his mixes are harmonically stellar. Record labels had no problem letting him at master DATs (remember those?) and to mixes not commercially available. He's worked with Madonna on voice and other artists. The list goes on and I for one can't sing his praises enough. Joseph was and is extremely forward thinking and cares about his projects and products. I was exposed to a lot of 80's New Wave artists because of him with mixes that blew away the originals. I want Joseph's work to get the respect and adoration it deserves. Again, he is genius and deserves our love and thanks!!

I never said I didn't like the Razormaid mixes. I only questioned whether they would be easy to include on an official CD (meaning if they had the record company's approval). I agree that the Razormaid mix of master & Servant is actually better than the "official" 12" Mix (which is so repetitive I can hardly listen to it).

Let's not confuse Joseph Watt with Razormaid!. They are not one and the same. Watt did the Depeche remixes for Sire, and these were officially released by Sire.

Whether or not Depeche/Miller approved these mixes, I don't know, but they are in no way bootleg or even semi-bootlegs. However, Miller must have liked them, seeing as he later got Watt to remix a couple of Erasure singles, which were released by Mute in the UK.

I know you didn't (That's why I put a disclaimer after my comment). I was the one that brought up RM! to begin with.
My rant was about respect for Razormaid! in general as I've read other posts (Not your posts) that were quite dismissive regarding their service.
How difficult would it be for them to be included on a Depeche CD, I have no idea. Anyone with more knowledge please feel free to chime in.

I think it would happen if permission was asked. Joseph is great and I'd believe this could be a reality.

I also don't want anyone to think I thought they were (in this thread) maligning Razormaid! I can certainly see that there is respect for Joseph's legacy. I'm just happy that Joseph and Razormaid! are being discussed. The more people that are brought to the attention of this great service the better.
